correct me if i am wrong but does 1080p up conversion mean it makes dvds look better on 1080p Televisions ??
I have this unit--from Woot when it was $20 more. It is a decent midrange system, good bass, decent high end...and no midrange
1000W? I doubt it. Maybe for a fraction of a second before the speakers melt.
@demigod51L 1080P upconversion means the DVD player uses software to "blow up" the image to make it appear to be 1080p. It can make the image look better on very old HDTVs which used very poor interpolation, but most TVs today expand the image on their own in ways that look every bit as good as an upconverting DVD player.
@charlesburns: I've bought nothing but Philips, their systems have always been quality in my experience (2 systems over 10 years). Had to buy a second because I wanted a black unit over silver.
Not to mention this is $99. Show me another full setup like this for $99..that is a deal.
i got this at walmart on clearance rack, for $30 more about 3 months ago. have had no problems, i personally think this is a really good buy! almost wish i would have waited.
I bought this a couple of months ago when it was 129$, and I was pitting it against a Logitech something-or-rather, but range wise, the Logitech was much more high-oriented, while the Phillips felt a lot more mid-low oriented. Not to mention this phillips has great sound quality. I'm actually using it as we speak, connected to my computer and listening to itunes. :D
You need one. Buy it now.
I bought one of these from Costco last december....makes a strange high-pitched intermittent whine when power is off...on the upside, playing standard def DVD's on my HDTV looks pretty darn good...
If buying a 500-1000 dollar TV makes sense, and then connecting this makes sense, you might want to re-evaluate your logic. Audio is a lot more important than visual in maintaining the illusion of immersion in a movie, so do yourself a favor and invest in a true audio system. Hint: it probably won't come in one big box.
Bought myself one of these at Walmart Christmas last year (for full price) and I love it. As a mid-range home theater system for a smallish living room it is perfect. Obviously it does not compare to a $1000 high-end system but it is not meant to.
I wish I could have gotten one for this price.
I too got this off Woot a while back - I had to update the firmware, but otherwise haven't had any problems with it. It has a USB port to view pictures & videos and play MP3's which I like. The sound is actually better than my Sony LCD TV and so the audio for everything coming out of my TV runs through this.

i didnt know they charge tax :(
Bought this and it died less than 6 months after. Made a really high pitch ringing out of nowhere so i turned it off, Never turned back on again. Re-think this one.
