This does look like a good deal but it appears to be a "gray market" item. If you have trouble with the lens it is unlikely that any Canon warranty would apply. I have never used this retailer before so, depending on how shady they are, this could be a very good deal or very risky.

@shaneyboy: How can you tell it's a gray market item? I'm interested in a lens like this but don't want to buy something without a warranty.

Decided to pass -- think I will save up for a really good zoom rather than a "good enough" one. Informative review & analysis here, for future reference:

Gray market doesn't mean it's a knock off. They're still made by Canon. They just don't get sold by authorized retailers or arrive through approved shipping channels. They might get bought in another country for cheap and then resold in a different one for a profit.

Not that it matters now since they are all gone but they were not necessarily "gray market" lenses. A lot of the kit lenses (18-55, 28-135, 55-250, even the 24-105L) are sold in the white boxes that are removed form kits. This allows retailers to maximize their profits by splitting up the kits. The lenses come with Canon USA warranties.

I am not saying this is the case here but sometimes its worth asking the retailer and not passing on a great deal without all the information.
