A+R Bloom in a Can Message Bean for $16
A message bean? Were just as mystified as you and the hundreds of others whove picked up this magical bean-in-a-can from our A+R shops in the last few years. A word or symbol is lasered on a seed and it then appears on the bean sprout.

Now that puts "your name on a grain of rice" to shame. Only problem is that they only have a handful of canned phrases -- it needs to be customizable. I think "Magical Fruit" would be appropriate for a bean stalk. Beans, beans, the magical fruit... the more you eat, the more you Woot!
Amazing. NOT. Anyone who knows how a seed germinates can see this is nothing more than a seed which has been lasered, then planted. The part you see with the printing on it is called the cotyledon, or which each seed has two. Someone may think these are the first leaves, but they are not. They are no larger than the seed itself, and lie just under the seed coat. I could scratch swear words on a seed coat, and have nasty plants grow.
@digbydriver: Scientifically accurate, but Lord, what a buzzkill. It's a gag gift, probably intended for NON-botanists. Lighten up a little.
It would be cool if it were more reasonably priced or if you could customize it. Imagine the look on a kid's face when the sprout comes out with their name on it!
I agree with the other Wooters...I have a niece who is two and she loves to water flowers. I clicked through on this one thinking I could customize it...ready to purchase. But, alas, the only messages were the common generic ones and and odd "Good Lucky". I'm sure the biological engineering behind this is too complicated to personlize the product. However, they've figured out how to do just about anything over there...so come on bean guys, get a move on!
I swear I bought one of these about 5 years ago for half the price.
these are 10 for a buck shipped on dealextreme
These are 12.95 or 2/9.95 ea. in the latest Signals catalog.
