I have this soldering iron. The mount that holds up the iron holder is cheap and mine broke almost immediately. That being said though, the iron itself works great and this price is MUCH less than what I paid for mine. This is a very good deal.

@theolaf: This is the one we have at work and it held up great, I am thinking of getting one for home. What part broke? How did it break?

Too bad shipping drives the price up over Amazon's.

Looks like a clone copy of a Weller station that I spent nearly $60 on.

Where can you even get replacement tips for this? Does anyone know if Weller tips fit?

parts express has a tip kit for it, this iron is great i had one for a couple years now and its still perfect. I cant imagine how the stand could break, it a one piece heavy gauge steel wire, maybe you didn't push it in the base tight enouth

@cavimike: From the Q&A section in the linked page:
Collin, I have been using these for my students in my vintage47amps workshops and you can get the replacement tips in a 4 pack of assorted tips right here at Parts Express, search under the product name, 4 tips for $5 and discard the ones you don't use. Since I build with period correct terminal tag connections I have to use a chisel tip for the large surface, so I just buy a tip set with each station and install the appropriate tip from day one.

@cavimike: Aren't you from OCN? Parts-express has a replacement set. I would recommend you order one when you buy this, or if you have a Fry's nearby, the Velleman BITS5 is the exact stock one.

I've had two of these (one stopped turning on after a week) and the Velleman VTSS5U. Exact same unit internally.

They take forever to heat up, temperature control is iffy and varies between units. But what do you expect for $15?

@stephenaedwards: Yes, but the tip set is twice the price at Amazon.

Deal Breaker: Shipping for me shows as $8.91 - nearly doubles the price!

Cheapest shipping option is $12.95.

There are plenty of bad reviews on parts express and on Amazon about this model. Ranging from the parts given not snapping together to form a workable iron, to the internal wiring melting on first use, Dead on Arrival, or just plain never getting more than warm.
There are also an equal number of good reviews.
Prepare to test on arrival and return as necessary. Considering the shipping.

If you live near Fry's (yes an electronic goods store), you can get it for $19.99 made by Vellman; model VTSST5
