These bands suck....I can almost guarantee it

vote-for0vote-against

Yea... They pretty much all suck. They're either sampler albums or they're boring as all get out.

vote-for1vote-against

Try the Alive comp....

It's all personal opinion...no offense Mr Palm Sampler

vote-for1vote-against

They require you to install special software to download. Why? So they can track you? Maybe some DRM to limit your use of your own computer? No thanks.

vote-for3vote-against

I've heard House of Heroes are a great band.
Looks like I've found my personal diamond in the rough!

vote-for5vote-against

If you listen to Christian music, B.Reith and House of Heroes both have albums in here.

vote-for1vote-against

Ugh, I was in the process of installing the downloader and was suddenly prompted for my billing info...
You've disappointed me Amazon.

vote-for3vote-against

No DRM - and if it says it's free, it's free. You just need an amazon account to be able to download.

It might not be good music, but it's free.

vote-for3vote-against

I was able to pick up some nice classical music from this. Thanks!

vote-for3vote-against

Five of the albums aren't available yet. Four will be 1/31, and one 2/9.

@emhodew: I'm as paranoid as the next guy, but I just don't see Amazon doing that.

vote-for1vote-against

@emhodew: no its just to ensure that you get your one guaranteed download of the drm free track. i assure you it's drm free. in fact, once youve downloaded it (or after 12 hours after purchase) the only way to download it again is to contact customer support.

vote-for9vote-against

the amazon software is only for downloading. billing info is for one click ordering. if you have an amazon account already no big deal. I've been using amazon's mp3 downloader for over a year and have not had my identity stolen or any problems. However, most of the free samplers I've downloaded from amazon in the past are full of garbage but you will find one or two songs that you like if you take a chance

vote-for3vote-against

@reatardfan: i've been listening to the "i love the 80s" one for weeks during my workouts. sure, some suck. but it's worth a look.

vote-for7vote-against

@emhodew:
Been using it for a couple of years,no problems.I'd trust Amazon over any other store on the internet.I've dealt A LOT with them and the very few times I've had to contact customer service left me shaking my head at how awesome they are.
You can be TOO cautious.

vote-for1vote-against

If you download them one song at a time you don't need Amazon's installer. It's a bit of pain but it's free!

vote-for2vote-against

cool -- there are a few classical gems scattered in this -- the Philip Glass sampler includes enough of his stuff to wet your appetite - which is the goal of a freebie -- and there is a nice set of classical tracks on the Analekta sampler -- including the 1st mvt of Beethoven's 5th --

vote-for1vote-against

@klrowklrow: been using the Amazon downloader for quite a while now -- it ties into itunes pretty easily and is pretty much invisible the rest of the time - make sure to clear completeds after they import into itunes

vote-for1vote-against

I love the 80's .... The 1880's fail.

vote-for1vote-against

I've been working my way through this catalog for a couple months (I spend about 30 minutes every week or two) and I've found some good stuff, including...

- Several good Xmas tunes last month
- Some good house and dance
- "Pitter-Pat" by Erin McCarley (on the landing page — subsequently bought the album)
- That "I Love the '80s (1880s)" on the landing page (full pieces by Dvorak, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Brahms)
- some Ani Difranco

If you have some time to kill listening to 30-second samples, you can really score.

Only complaint: You have to use Amazon's download software to do more than one song per "purchase." Not a big deal, but I'm not a fan of proprietary store software.

EDIT: They also have a free songs section that is HUGE.

vote-for1vote-against

free music is alway great!

vote-for1vote-against

@emhodew: Nothing stops you from uninstalling the download software once you snag the MP3 files.

vote-for2vote-against

Wow, they have 18th Century Folk Songs of Northern Croatia!!!

vote-for1vote-against

@emhodew: I've been using it for almost a year now without a problem. I downloaded Halloween Scary Sounds for $.99 last October, cheaper than buying a CD.

vote-for1vote-against

I've also been using Amazon to download mp3's for quite some time now. You can keep the software on your machine and turn it off when you want. When you need to download a song, simply start up the software again. They often offer ups free mp3's, granted not that great, but occasionally there's a keeper or two.

I'm stuck in the 80s too. I recently downloaded a new Lita Ford song for free, from Amazon. You have nothing to lose, exepct for a few minutes when you get the email containing the link for the freebies.

The Amazon downloader acts as a conduit between the website and your computer not unlike how Apple uses iTunes as its conduit except the store front and the downloader are oddly two separate things. What's puzzling to me is there doesn't seem to be a way to click to get the album without having to get the downloader with each purchasing session you initiate. In other words, every session you do (not every album, every download session) seems to require downloading the Amazon downloader (at least on a Mac anyway) rather than it recognizing that you already have it installed and even when it's pre-launched. That is annoying and needs to be fixed.

I already had an Amazon account, so installing it was no big deal. I've already taken advantage of two of these kinds of deals with no shady billing crap going on. Besides, Amazon has spent way too much time building their reputation than to get sneaky and anti-consumer like that.

vote-for1vote-against

The House of Heroes CD ROCKS!!!!

vote-for2vote-against

I got excited when I saw "I Love The '80s", but then I realized it was the 1880s, not the 1980s.

vote-for2vote-against

If you have an existing Amazon account, no real problem getting the songs.
Rodrigo & Gabriela "Hanuman" is terrific.

vote-for1vote-against

Philip Glass, Ani Difranco, Les Claypool, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Mulatu Astatke, Del the Funky Homosapien... There are a couple serious gems in here.

vote-for1vote-against

Watch out for the d/l program though, make sure to hit up the properties to make it do what you want before downloading.

vote-for1vote-against

Thanks! I was able to find 2 albums I was interested in, and they are now on my phone.

vote-for1vote-against

@benislegend: House Of Heroes is pretty good. . probably the only real gem in the bunch. Also the Les Claypool stuff was, well. . Les Claypool.

vote-for1vote-against

You have to check out the Philip Glass "Orange Mountain Music sampler." It's great!

vote-for1vote-against

Ani Difranco is pretty interesting if you're geared toward alternative/folk rock with a touch of punkish activist thrown in for good measure.

vote-for1vote-against

Its a crap-shoot, sure, but a free one. I love some of the songs from artists that I had not heard of before. If I don't love a song, I delete it. But you might be pleasantly surprised how a big block of previously unfamiliar songs can contain some gems!

vote-for1vote-against

This isn't new, amazon has been doing this for quite awhile, and it was listed here at awhile ago too...

vote-for1vote-against

@benislegend:
thanks for the heads up about House of Heroes. I like em! Too bad its only an EP, guess I'll spend the $5 for the full 16 songs.

vote-for1vote-against

Nice find, never actually thought about searching Amazon like this. There's some good stuff in there, and some crap. Haven't heard of 99% of them, but I have heard of a few. Just download stuff and see what you like. You might find something new.

vote-for1vote-against

Saddle Creek and Anti- Records samplers are recommended for when you want a dose of indie/college radio.

Nuclear Blast is awesome when you break out the black denim after you finish your shift at Guitar Center.

Lookout is good for the punk in you who pretends that you can get through life as a "freegan."

Also, even though it's only one track, do yourself a favor and download Breakestra. It's like old school James Brown style funk without the ear piercing vocals.

vote-for1vote-against

First: the Amazon software (if you check) is not required to download the mp3s. In fact, it says so in a little clickable link somewhere on the page( sorry, don't remember where)

I've used the software before. Amazon gives DRM free musig without limitations on it. I should know, if they had limits, I'd have used it on some of the music.

Like someone else said, it depends on the person. Some of the music you find might be good, some of it might not. It varies.

vote-for1vote-against

I liked Discover TEXAS MUSIC - that's real country!

Turkish Hits Vol 1 ?????

Looked, NOTHING, WOW, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

LOOKED, NOTHING, WOW, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

vote-for1vote-against

@benislegend: They just want your account info for the item transaction. You will get a notification after dl'ing with a $0 charge. It really isn't a big deal.
