@stewarthamblin: With this mod, the camera doesn't work.

@triplebud: Do you actually own a touchpad? Didn't think so...

I have two running the latest cyanogenmod nightlies. They were cheap, they are powerful and ICS is a nice tablet OS. If anyone is in the market for a tablet and has the money, why not? It's not firesale price but this is a good deal. My second touchpad was from the last woot refurb and it was just like getting a brand new one.

Great Tablet but be forewarned that micro-usb connector can get damaged rendering both charging and usb connection useless. Mine's under warranty and under repair but this would suck for a refurb. So if you get this, then also get a Touchstone so less wear & tear on the connector.

If you're not tech-savy and want to purchase one of these but aren't sure if you can install ICS on your own, I would suggest looking up Reverend Kyle on YouTube. His videos take you through the install in easy to follow, step-by-step instructions even a novice like me could understand. My TP arrived Friday and that night I was already a couple hours into enjoying my first exposure to Android.

@caffeine_dude: CM7 is a bit more stable on my other devices, so I tried it out via triple boot. I've not had any real stability problems with cm9, though, so I got rid of 7 and put arch on it. I'm about ready to give up on webos, though. (By the way, this thing needs Swype more than NY other device I've got, but I'm on it now)

@b2pi: Would you point me to newish instructions for the TRI boot? I have cm7 and WebOS now.
Does the mic work in CM9? When I checked last it did not so I got cm7 instead.

@b2pi: I put Swype on mine last night. I followed the instructions here:

I had to install the Java SDK, and put all the files in the program files - java - bin folder to get it to work for me. It was my first dabble into any sort of compiling, if you can call it that.

Probably not for the beginner, but it works great so far. Honestly now that I have it, it isn't as useful as it is on smaller devices like phones. Seems like takes forever to slide your finger across all that real estate.

The development community is awesome on this device, it will be a little while, but I think everything will be working properly in Android. I have enjoyed trying different ROMs & tweaks more than just using the device for interneting and such.

Questions:

* what is the battery's life expectancy? is it replaceable?

* mico-usb sync cable: does that serve as the means to load data, or is it strictly for charging?

Thank you for all the good commentary... I look forward to some more information.

@suit6236:

Battery life - 1000+ charge/discharge cycles - I wouldn't worry about it. Get Dr. Battery from Preware. Mine shows 95% capacity after 6mos medium use.

Micro-usb port is for both data and charging using only a wall outlet. You can't use PC to charge. Port is pretty flimsy and not shock resistant. Mine already broke but under warranty HP has already fixed it and I should be getting it back today - 6 days after I shipped it.
