Stereo? There is nothing in the specs that would lead me to believe this shouldn't cost <$40 . It doesn't even have HDMI... why would they even market this thing?

What does HDMI have to do with being a stereo?
This STEREO has two channels... which is STEREO.
Of course, it's a basic one and overpriced to allow for the "free" Polk Atrium speakers. Even with the speakers, this is overpriced by about $50 for the package.

HDMI is the standard for audio and video these days. If you want to use this device to say, run the sound for a media system at home, it would require a number of different steps inputs from your devices/computers. Where HDMI is well... awesome. I agree, this is not a deal. It may be a real solid receiver and the speakers are certainly nice, but not worth that much if it's not going to be compatible with any modern equipment.
