There was the sword and sandal era- remember Steve Reeves?
And the island epoch- remember South Pacific and Bali Hai?
I think it's about an 11 year cycle. Space creatures, dinosaurs, westerns, hippies, whatever; every 11 years they come back for a year or three, then transition to the next phase.
