And there go my dreams of thinking I could put an actual moon base in my name on the moon :(

I guess this will do for now...

Also, Steam <3

The link to download this from Steam doesn't work...it just brings up the Steam Store homepage. Nothing comes up when you search for things like "moonbase" or "nasa" either. :(

@ej21: Please read the listing. It is not available yet, but is going to be available today. There are no download links in the post above, only information links.

I will update as soon as the Steam link is available.

NASA Games has just let me know that it will be live any moment now!

Ok, if you want to install it right now and not wait for the Stema page to become active, type this into your web browser's address bar:

steam://install/39000

If you are asked what to open it with, browse to your Steam.exe, usually located at:

c:\program files\steam\steam.exe

@y0himba: Yay! Sorry, wasn't paying attention for a second there. Thanks a bunch for posting!

Can't get it to work, windows shuts it down before it finishes loading, dunno why.

vote-for3vote-against

I have it working on 3 computers here. Mine, and both of my kids. Looks like you may need to contact Steam or NASA games for support.

What is the error your getting?

vote-for3vote-against

The link is working great! i am already downloading the game!! But i dont know if the game looks fun or not!

vote-for1vote-against

I know that my kids are enjoying it. I played for a bit and found it fun.

NASA is trying the old "let's make a 'game' and get bums to solve our problem" routine. Those astronauts living on the moon need to fix their own damn problems.

A few excerpts from the EULA:

"This product is owned by the government of the United States of America and its use and reproduction are governed by the terms of this Licensing Agreement."

"BY OPENING THE SOFTWARE MEDIA PACKAGE, YOU ARE AGREEING TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSING AGREEMENT, INCLUDING THE GOVERNMENT'S ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY AND SUCH OTHER POLICIES AS IT MAY FROM TIME TO TIME ESTABLISH."

"RECIPIENT AGREES TO WAIVE ANY AND ALL CLAIMS AGAINST THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND ITS CONTRACTORS AND SUBCONTRACTORS, AND SHALL INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND ITS CONTRACTORS AND SUBCONTRACTORS FOR ANY LIABILITIES, DEMANDS, DAMAGES, EXPENSES OR LOSSES THAT MAY ARISE FROM RECIPIENT’S USE OF THE SOFTWARE."

....

And I can't even scroll all the way to the end of the EULA, so who knows what's down at the bottom. If this were a private company I'd feel a bit better since you can always sue, but suing the U.S. Govt sounds daunting. Not installing.

It all makes sense now. Where is Neil Armstrong and the gang? Can I update the footage to add my name to the first FAKE landing on the moon. I want to go down in history. Yeah, it is 40 years late, but NASA camera technology hasn't improved much. MRSLY first DUDE on the moon, for the Idiocracy generation. They think Paris Hilton and Snookie have talent, they will fall for this. Well they do, but it can't be discussed on a board with children reading. I guess we can call it Hot Dog throating!

@kovo: That's pretty standard fare for software EULAs. I can't remember the last time I installed a game (or any other program for that matter) without some language that removed any liability on the developer's part in the EULA.

@kovo: I'll let you know when they have a deal on Tinfoil hats. ;)

mythbusters proved that the photos could be legitimate. they did a whole episode on it. the photo that looks like it has multiple light sources was busted first.

I have been trying to download the game for a while, but I get the message "cannot contact the Steam network, please try later".

vote-for2vote-against

Probably due to the high volume of downloads from the server. You can keep trying or try putting this in your web browser's address bar:

steam://install/39000

Aww, not Mac-compatible. :/

vote-for1vote-against

OMG it takes up almost 1GB of space! It better me a damn good game!

vote-for1vote-against

Okay game, but not fantastic. Too limited for my tastes.

vote-for0vote-against

pretty cool definitely will give it a try

i also noticed it was released in 1999 i thought it was some sort of new game promotion thing

vote-for2vote-against

So, do they send me Tang or do I have to supply that myself?

vote-for1vote-against

@y0himba: It's one of those standard windows ones that says something like moonbasealpha.exe has run into an error and must close. Send report or cancel. No other details.

vote-for1vote-against

@stupergenius: If Gen. McNeill shows up at your door, you've won the game.

vote-for1vote-against

This game is great for griefing.
...in space!

vote-for1vote-against

@animuson: You must not play too many PC games. Most big releases these days take many gigabytes of space.

vote-for1vote-against

The best part of the game is the text to speech. It sounds like Stephen Hawking. lol. Otherwise it's just a bunch of moon bouncing around and fixing hoses with a welder. haha... still good for free. The new Alien Swarm game that came out is pretty good if you can get 4 competent people to play. :)
