Ooma Telo VoIP Home Phone System for $139.99 + $5.00 shipping
If you’re looking for VoIP, you should know this Ooma Telo VoIP Home Phone System is fit… for a king.
I received mine already. I can tell it's used, but the worst thing is that it didn't include the ethernet cable! I tried resolving through OOMA, but they said Woot has to fix it. Bummer!
Shipping Update
Ooma Telo VoIP Home Phone System has completely shipped via FEDEX SMART POST. All tracking has already been emailed out. You can also find your tracking number by following this link and use your ORDER NUMBER as the reference number.
Garbage! Ooma customer service is terrible! Once you activate, if you want to sell or give to someone else, you have to disconnect and next person pays $80 reconnect fee! Even though I had it less than a week and it did not work well, they refused to reset to original, unactivated state so next owner could avoid $80 fee.
I have had all major VoIP solutions...the best Obi110 for FREE google voice...all the same features, some even much better, no monthly fees, NO TAXES, better rates than Ooma for Int'l
Will everyone stop with the Magicjack needing a PC that is no longer the case. Check for your self...
@jdtwin: Works fine with any handset system
I highly recommend the Ooma product...We've had both the original "Hub" as well as the "Telo"- service has been excellent for several years since buying, and all buyers must recognize their service will only be as good as their broadband providers network. The array of calling features options are also outstanding. Our "old" number was ported in without ANY delay or difficulty, customer service- no complaints. Give it a try- you wont be disappointed.
@caffeine_dude: Not sure how you would "lose" your number, if the port fails then it just stays with the current phone company.
I'm very interested in this but I have a few special concerns that I could use input on:
1. I have 7-8 phones tied into my current phone system, which is a pseudo-VIOP system that Charter uses in its very expensive bundle. I don't currently have a problem with all of the phones ringing but I'm concerned that they may not when I connect to the Ooma box. This used to be known as a REN or Ringer Equivalency Number. Any thoughts or experiences with multiple discrete phones?
2. We also have a toll-free 866 number that is used for our home business. It is the same as our landline number except of course for the 866 prefix. How would we get that setup ported over to Ooma?
Thanks for the advice!
@cowboydann: I just switched from Magic Jack to this. MJ is extremely unreliable, no customer service number and very buggy. I had to reset mine 4 times today.
In for one! My bill is $53.98/month for phone service. I just couldn't do it anymore. I hope I don't have any issues since my Max speed for DSL in my area is 3MB. Does anyone have internet speeds around the same as me? Any issues using the Ooma?
@nransil: Works perfectly, my mom is one of those that I sometimes have to hang up on and call back just to get a word in when using cells, no such problems with Ooma!
I think I am ready to go ahead and grab one of these. Question for you veteran users though... One of the main reasons we keep our 40 a month landline is because my wife and my mother in law tend to interrupt, and talk over each other in phone conversations. When it is cell phone to cell phone, they do that noise cancelling thing, and it ends up making you want to stab yourself in the ear with a pencil... Does anyone have experience with an Ooma to cell call, with... how shall I say this... spirited? lively? active? type conversation?
Also, is there any downside to buying a refurb, esp. if I needed to return it b/c call quality is not good on the mother in law calls? (My wife is skeptical...) Thanks for any help!
We recently bought an Ooma unit, and we LOVE it! We had to troubleshoot and used the forums for help. Great help and quick responses. Our cordless phone didn't mesh for whatever reason. We tried another phone, and now we're making clear calls with ease. ...And I can finally twist my fingers in the cord again!
My parents are loving the one we bought for them. They were paying $118.00 for phone and internet!!!! Yowch! Now, their internet bill is $20-something dollars and NO ridiculous phone bill.
@imatt: That would be the cheapest setup, but you're banking on GV staying free. For 2012 it will be, but who knows afterward?
@tsfisch: Tim, is that you?
On topic:
I purchased one for my folks for Christmas and they loved it. I got one for myself to port over my VOIPO line, and it too works great. Port took about 1 week and everything was awesome.
Thanks everyone for the reviews!! I just bought and will be booting my Verizon $35 a month phone bill for $4.67 (in my area) a month.
Wahooo!
I hate to say this, Ooma in the beginning was terrible.
1. We lost our number even when https://go.ooma.com/phone_numbers says it is portable. I was so pissed I demanded they change the site to tell others the number is not portable. They did not.
2. Quality was bad.
Ooma fixed the quality. First they had me put the box between my modem and router... this did not work. Second they had me go in the phone switch and tune it, I do not remember the settings. This worked great. I even put it back in it's place on my router.
3. We could not dial a town 15 miles away.
Support asked for some times of the dialing and fixed the issue in 2 weeks, it was a phone switch routing issue(I live in rural Iowa).
I am very happy with Ooma now.
Ooma support rocks!
@tsfisch: No, this will not work with our ADT Alarm service. We had to get the cell-phone-base-unit installed that ADT offers as an option.
We have had our Ooma for more than 2 years now and we are very happy with it. I check my messages on-line sometimes when I travel. We have the small approx $3.00 charge auto billed to a credit card. It sure beats a monthly phone bill.
@jdtwin: It works with any phone system, just plug in the base phone and the others will work. I have my phone system base plugged in along with a separate cordless phone, and my fax using a bunch of splitters and they all work fine. I got this last year off Woot and couldn't be happier. Like others said, didn't even look like a refurb and I too keep getting the vonage we want you back emails and letters. What's more fun is when they call or AT&T calls and tries to sell you their deal and they ask how much your paying now for your phone bill, and when you say $3.47/ month, they don't know what to say, it's like, never mind.
I have been very happy with Ooma. It does work with my alarm system but the alarm system had to be reprogramed to use an older form of data transmission. I highly recommend Ooma.
Bought a refurb OOMA Telo on WOOT about 15 months ago. Ported my Qwest land-line phone number to OOMA. Set-up was a breeze and their Cust Support is superior. Voice quality is terrific on all 3 of my digital phones. For about $4.25 a month I get unlimited local & LD calling in US. Also, OOMA offers low international rates. Sure beats my Qwest $25+ analog monthly service.
@ronansdad: the major difference with Ooma is that it is a stand-alone device and does not require a computer to operate.
Been using a refurb Ooma for over a year now without issue.
On top of that used live chat and even called for support a few days ago (turned out to be a Charter problem). Support was great and immediate, VERY hard to find these days.
Ordering a second one today (in for 1). Getting one for our Daughter.
We switched from Vonage to Ooma about a year ago, and we are SO glad that we did. The overall cost is much lower, and the quality is much higher. If you are thinking about buying this Ooma (as we did from Woot) - DO IT!
I have a Panasonic home digital system. Does anyone know if this would work with that?
Not again!! this is 2x this has been on here in about a month.:(
Interesting.....same price here for the same unit that was available during the 'woot off' the other day....guess they weren't really sold out when they moved on to the next item.
We have had our Ooma for a little over a month now. I bought the package deal from Costco that included the Telo and the Wireless Adapter. It works incredibly well on our AT&T Uverse internet. We live in Southern California and we just received our first monthly bill for $3.78. Previously I was paying approximately $40 for AT&T. I did the math and this will pay for itself in 6 months. Also the Ooma website/dashboard is great. You can view your call logs, retrieve voice mails, etc from any internet connected device. I believe this is available to all Ooma users, not just premier users.
There are always those people who "wonder" why others even have a landline anymore. Personally, we have two compelling reasons. First, our Verizon service is terrible at our house (lots of dropped calls). Secondly, my wife and I work at home a lot and participate in many long conference calls.
Can anyone tell me if you can disable call waiting if you just have the basic service? I have MJ plus (so I don't need a computer on) but I cannot disable call waiting. It's annoying to me and my callers can hear the beeping also.
I've known about the Ooma for about a year now. I've pretty much was waiting for a sale. I guess this is the one. I've been fighting with Lingo Phone over their billing practices for years. Goodbye Lingo. Hello Ooma. This should easily pay for itself in 6 months. I've not heard one complaint about service or quality from this company.
How does Ooma work when you are on the phone and a movie is streaming in over netflix at the same time? I have heard there is a problem there. My DSL download speed is only 5 MBS max. That would be a problem as I watch a lot of streaming...
I bought my Ooma a few months back on Woot! It was a refirb and I've had no hardware troubles at all. The setup and transfer was interesting, they do charge a fee to port your home number, or you can just get a new one (in any area code, wherever you are).
Had some intermittent QoS problems, but I'm convinced that it was due to my ISP not the device. Haven't had any issues since.
It just takes a little getting used to the Ooma dialtone.

I bought a refurbished Ooma Telo from Woot about a year ago and have been very happy with it. I couldn't even tell it was a refurb, and we've had zero problems with it. I dumped Vonage, ported my number over, and opted out of the Premier service so I'm saving about $25 a month (it basically paid for itself in less than six months).
I run my Ooma between the cable modem and the router, and have experienced flawless service. I received another "we want you back" email from Vonage this week and laughed!
PS - I'm buying one from this offering and giving it to my mother. :)
@cowboydann:
I suggest using the Obi100 instead of either. Less than $50 for the unit, no monthly fee, and it links your desktop phone with google voice. I've held 2 hour conference calls on the thing using my desktop speakerphone, and nobody knew I was using a 100% free VOIP service.
@twadam: Yes the VM can be configured to wait between 10-59 seconds
Just spent 200 on this a couple of weeks ago. We spend 4.77/mo for taxes. Its a great unit and nice clear calls. I really love it. Pissed that this pops up now though :p
This product doesn't seem all that useful now that you can make phone calls for free using GMail.
I guess that it would be helpful if you had a fax machine... but I don't have one.
We moved from Vonage to Ooma a few months ago. The call quality is much better with Ooma. The one thing Ooma doesn't have as standard is the voice to text so that a voicemail can be sent as a text to your cell phone. But it is available as an addon. Also with Ooma you pay for European calls separately.
Once you pay for the premier services, the voice to text, the international calls, then the cost difference between the two shrinks to almost nothing.
But for local calls, with no added services the cost and voice quality makes it hard to beat.
I'm an early adopter of VOIP services, being an early vonage customer. I make about 10 calls a month unless there is something exciting going on so feel bad making huge phone payments. When they got too expensive a couple years ago (at 19.99 including taxes) I went with Phonepower, at 12.99 (inc taxes) This was a 2 year deal. After the 2 year deal they would not renew at this rate so I went to ooma. Also experimented with magic jack and others.
In my opinion Ooma has the best service of any I have tried with the best home unit functionality. I can use the base as an answering machine as well as anything else. I did have a problem porting the number, but it was resolved after 24 hours. I think the problem was that the number got released before they were ready for it so I was in limbo for a while.
Overall great experience setting up, and the only complaint is that there are so many options. That's a good thing.
I got one here in October or so last year. After trying it out for a bit I decided I was happy with it and ported my number over. My phone bill is about $4.50 but used to be around $33 so it will pay for itself. The premier features of Ooma are very attractive but I don't really need them. I would drop my land line altogether but we've had our number a long time so I would hate to give it up.
Now that magicJack came out with the Plus this could be a tougher sell due to the rather high up front cost. I have not tried magicJack personally but someone I work with uses it and says it works great. Nonetheless, I am happy with Ooma so far.
Regarding "will it work with a security system" the answer is probably.... with a catch(s)....
I recently got an ooma and it took quite an effor but I was able to get it to work with my alarm system. Here are the catches....
The standard, default reporting format of "Contact ID", which you alarm system is almost certainly using, will likely not work. The DTMF tones transmitted by the alarm panel do not survive the encoding (even when using *99 before it calls).
This means you will need to use an alternative format.... I found that Radionics 4+2 is only one that worked.
It is unlikely the 4+2 reporting codes are programmed into your zones correctly. This means that they will need to be programmed.
So more than likely you will need to have your alarm panel programmed. It CAN be done via dialup by the center but BEFORE you cancel your POTS line. The alarm center can't connect to the panel over ooma, must be a POTS line.
Hope this helps!
Can you configure the number of rings before ooma takes a message (ie., force the voicemail to be left on the physical home phone ... not the ooma device)
For those wondering about Ooma and security systems...I have an Ooma and never got it working with my system. So I bought a "GSM Terminal Gateway" off eBay for about $70. It takes a GSM sim card (I bought a T-Mobile prepaid sim) and generates a dialing tone for the alarm system to use. It works flawlessly and costs about $3 / month in prepaid credit to run. I also like the fact that it's separate from the Ooma system in case something on my internet connection breaks.
It's also a bunch cheaper than the "official" wireless solutions from the alarm companies.
YMMV, but it works great for me.
@avmiii: Yes it includes activation. No need to pay extra for it.
I got mine two offers ago and absolutely love it. I had MajicJack prior and didn't like that when/if one of my kids turned the computer off, we lost the phone. It also didn't run on the existing home phone lines. In other words, we couldn't use it with an alarm system or our old Tivo box that needs to dial out for updates.
When we switched to the Ooma, the setup was easy, the cost did include the activation, but we did pay for the porting for $40. I reversed the house jack so it will run through the home wiring so it does work with the Alarm System with no issues. Our alarm is an older Brinks system (now ADT.)It works fine on our fax machine and older Tivo box too.
The one extra thing I did was to add a battery backup to the cable modem, router and Ooma device, so when we do have power outage, we don't lose telephone. The alarm is also on a battery back-up so we don't lose that either.
Doing all of this did cost a bit more upfront, but the monthly savings pays for itself.
Out of Mana Always phone system?
1. I can't speak to the security system question.
2. This is how I moved over. I set up a temporary number first, then ported. In fact, if you choose to port, this is the default option. The porting process happened over the weekend, so we were without service on Sunday, but otherwise was fine.
3. Premiere is $100 per year. I decided against it. Some of the features are cool and go well beyond normal phone service, but I think they are of little practical use to a normal user.
Does the refurbished unit sold here include activation? Otherwise Ooma lists this cost at $80, so it become cheaper to buy a new unit at Amazon etc for example $200 that includes activation.
