Dead page until Pre-Orders start up

vote-for7vote-against

I just ordered two through the pre-order page.
It went through okay for me ... it might be on server overload right now?

vote-for22vote-against

hmm...only 8gb? and i don't see anything about memory card slot.

sure, the cloud storage is nice, but what happens when you're stuck somewhere without wifi? can't say i'm quite sold on this yet.

vote-for1vote-against

Does anyone know what kind of processor this has? I assume it would be on par with current tablets, but at that price, I wonder if it is an older type of processor.

vote-for4vote-against

love it. want it. but i am wanting at least an SD card slot...
idk if i can do with 8gb

vote-for4vote-against

I just bought one. Pure speculation. I will find out more about it in due time, can cancel the order prior to shipment, and most likely will be able to sell it on CL or a certain auction website for a profit the day it comes out.

Just being cynical... I meant honest.

vote-for5vote-against

So, that's what HP did with all their surplus parts for the 7" TouchPadGo...

vote-for5vote-against

@gojomoso: No SD slot because you can stash all your stuff in your "cloud" and access it wirelessly.

Well, technically it would be their cloud...

vote-for1vote-against

@wnyx585am: So far I can just see it mentions a 'State of the Art' Dual Core CPU ... Cannot find anything yet on the exact specs.

vote-for1vote-against

Look at the battery life stats... NO THANKS!

vote-for2vote-against

Wonder if this color version will have glare issues like all the rest of the tablets/color e-readers.

vote-for3vote-against

Hmmm, if it had a SD slot I'd have this ordered already.

Anyone know what Android OS it's running? It's Amazon, and it's brand new, so I'd assume it's 2.3 or 3.x, buuuuuttt.......?

(I'd like 3G too, but at least I can tether to my Android phone)

vote-for6vote-against

kindle fire runs android 2.3. resolution is 1024x768 it has a dual core processor (but no mention of the speed). 512 mb ram. 8GB storage. wifi. i'm not sure if it has expandable memory but apparently this device is pretty fast. i'm contemplating it..

vote-for7vote-against

@ganzhimself: No, supposedly it's based on the RIM Playbook tablet, but with only a power button. Rumor has it that they used the Playbook tablet to rush it to market for the holidays because the tablet Amazon wants to put out isn't going to be ready until next year.

vote-for-2vote-against

So what does this do that the Nook Color doesn't?

I have a nook color and it does all of this and is expandable to 40GB of memory!

No thank you Amazon, you came too late to the show.

vote-for2vote-against

Also I think the software is open so there should be a lot of third party type mods and hacks. :)

vote-for2vote-against

@bitterthought: Good to know about the OS, thanks. But Amazon is showing resolution @ 1024 x 600

vote-for1vote-against

I'm in. Looking forward to using this to watch Amazon Prime movies around the house.

vote-for2vote-against

Would I have to subscribe to an internet service in order search the internet?

vote-for6vote-against

@lpilkey: It sounds like you were too early to the purchase, actually.

vote-for6vote-against

@spellshock: If only they offered a different model without all the bells and whistles with a battery that would last over a month!

vote-for7vote-against

@lpilkey: The Nook can't stream Amazon TV/Movies without being hacked ... and then it's weak CPU (800Mhz?) is not good enough to smoothly stream anything unless it's resolution is lowered to the absolute minimum.

vote-for9vote-against

How is this a deal when it's regular list price?

vote-for19vote-against

@mistamoose: It's one of those "It's not a deals but you probably want to buy it anyway" deals that show up here all the time.

vote-for-20vote-against

This isn't a deal, you morons. This is the actual retail price.

vote-for3vote-against

@lpilkey: not at all. for the tech savvy who can do root it, this isn't for them.

For the many many others out there, this is great because it's an affordably priced tablet option.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm not sure this is an upgrade from my iPod Touch 4. Sure, the screen is larger, but no camera, and I've been wanting a better one and GPS, it has neither.

The downgrade? I have too many iOS apps. And I don't want to buy similar from Amazon. I own a Kindle 3, and loading my own mobis is how I do it. Never bought a thing from them. We'll see how this goes.

I was planning on buying an iPad 3 in April, but this does get my attention.

vote-for8vote-against

But isn't the 199 the release price, and not really a special? I mean I'm all for promoting new tech don't get me wrong, but your getting your gizmodo in my deal site.

vote-for0vote-against

This seems like an Amazon only device am I wrong? I have Amazon Prime right now and don't really care for the user interface when browsing movies and t.v. shows to watch instantly and only 8 gigs of memory means that any cloud content is not available if you go where there is no wifi then no content. I don't live in a huge city with wifi on every street corner so that would be an issue. How much cloud space do you get and how much is free? With more cloud systems coming online it is important to see what your own internet providers restrictions are on upload and download content per month and penalty for violating those limits. Don't know I would jump on this without knowing more since it is brand new.

vote-for2vote-against

@bestbuysucks: It has a dual core TI OMAP 1Ghz processor

vote-for2vote-against

Aargh! And I just rooted my new Nook Color.

"You always lose when you buy technology, because six months down the line they'll have something newer, faster, smaller and cheaper."

vote-for4vote-against

Looks like most of these have been posted already, but here are the specs that Android Central posted, FWIW:

•14.6 ounces
•7-inch IPS display at 1024x600
•Gorilla Glass
•1GHz dual-core TI OMAP processorDual-core processor
•Wifi-only
•Whispersync
•Amazon Silk browser
•WiFi, no 3G option
•8GB of on-board storage

vote-for1vote-against

From what I've heard though, the version of Android on this is supposedly heavily modified. It doesn't include Google software, like the Market and Maps (although it's got the Amazon App Store, so it's not like you're dead in the water).

I'm gonna wait to hear about the modifiability of this thing before I look at actually getting one...and waiting on the Lenovo tab that's supposed to be out soon. I think that one's supposed to have a camera, GPS, onboard maps, and an SD slot. Here's hoping, anyhow!

But this definitely kills my plans for a gtablet or Nook Color. Much nicer hardware than either of those, and I'm guessing that someone'll figure out how to root the thing pretty quick when it's out :-D

vote-for0vote-against

Pre-Ordering. I have a Touchpad, which I love, but I like that the Fire will have more Apps. I also like the ease of being able to watch my Prime movies and listen to my Cloud music just by pressing a button. The free app of the day is also a plus.

You know, if I get the Fire and just don't think it's worth the investment then I will return it. No harm, no foul. All good.

Also ordering the Kindle touch. I have the latest version of Kindle now, but I like the touch screen idea much better than having to use that teeny tiny keyboard and clicking on the side to turn my pages. A good day for consumers as these are set at a very competitive price point.

vote-for2vote-against

Called Amazon on this. No microsd is nearly a deal breaker for me. I don't know. What video formats will it play? The page info is so limited on this item that it left me with more questions than answers. I just don't like the idea of a non-expandable on board memory. 8gb is full quick these days with videos. Like several others have said, you don't always have access to wifi. I was going to get it for my kids and I don't want them to have wifi access all the time so it will make the decision a hard one.

vote-for1vote-against

If it supported EPUB, I would buy it, but alas, it does not.

vote-for4vote-against

Unlimited cloud storage for Amazon content means most of my music, media, etc. won't be onboard. 8 gig will hold a lotta books ...

I'm in for one.

vote-for1vote-against

@akremes: It has an anti-glare coating on the screen.

vote-for1vote-against

@bitler2000: I think one of the big draws of this is the Amazon app store, which has several epub reader apps...

vote-for-2vote-against

I doesn't look like it has "e-ink" or whatever they call their real paper looking screen. I bet this thing is just another Android tablet that you can't see in the sun light.

vote-for1vote-against

@nafhan: Wow, I didn't know that. thanks.

Welcome to Things That Are For Sale at Their Full Retail Price dot Woot dot com

The name needs a little work.

vote-for2vote-against

Amazon should put free 3G/4G connection like third generation kindle and it will be a done deal. Can't wait!

vote-for0vote-against

Not impressed. Wait until Black Friday and there will be plenty of desperate companies selling REAL Android tablets near this price point.

vote-for7vote-against

@wootbretz: But it still isn't a "deal". It's just a new product release.

It is a very interesting display of consumer behavior and what the Deals.Woot demographics represents. Interesting!

vote-for2vote-against

@narquespamley: Black Friday isnt what it used to be. The deals arent mind blowing or that great, usually bundles for tablets or computers have some sort of case, accessory, and junk tossed in, while the price tag remains the same, or a tad cheaper.

vote-for1vote-against

@aobfrost,
The point is more the time of year than Black Friday per se. The Android tablet market is very crowded, with a lot of entrants this year. I think we'll see a couple suppliers realize that sales are not what they need to be in order justify continuing investment and go a similar route as HP - perhaps not as dramatically, but with substantial markdowns to try to unload excess inventory during the holidays while they still can.
