Q & A !!!!

Q: I have a Smart TV, so, like, what can this do that blah blah blah..
A: Not everyone has a Smart TV. Good for you. This makes any TV into a Smart TV.

Q: OMG so this is just screen mirroring! I get it!
A: No, it gets the link you send, and displays the applicable content onto your television directly from the source page.

Q: But it's not HD 'cuz it's screen mirroring!!1
A: It supports full 1080p / 5.1 surround sound.

Q: What's the point?
A: Why spend $100 on a device which poorly re-invents the User Interface (Roku, WD TV Live) and lags like heck, or requires subscription fees (360), when all you want to do is watch the content? Your phone works already as a UI, and has far many more years of R&D into it. This lets you push content to your TV easily, without hassle.

Q: Does it play Amazon Instant Videos?
A: No. At least, not now. Maybe someday?

Q:Can this be used as input to 5.1 receiver and take the output from 5.1 receiver connect to TV ?
A: ??

Q: Can you use this to browse the internet ?
A:

I bought one. Because I like new gadgets, and I already have a Netflix subscription (since it includes 3 months of Netflix I'm saving about $24, meaning this device only cost me $11 before 3.99 shipping and about 2 dollars of tax).

if you can cast from a chrome browser, i would think you'd be able to do this. don't know for sure though. will find out in a couple week.

Available from Amazon with FS.

vote-for0vote-against

@aron1231: The biggest question I have, as an existing Netflix customer, is will it really take off the next 3 months off my bill? I'd find it hard to believe that Netflix would agree to that as it'd cost them $25 per existing customer. I wonder if they'll tack it onto the end your period or whatever (basically, 3 free months AFTER YOU CANCEL).

vote-for-43vote-against

In a world where smart TVs are a thing this doesn't seem to be particularly useful.

vote-for16vote-against

@stryker4526: not everyone has a smart tv though. i've got a 4 year old, 50" plasma that i have no intention of getting rid of any time soon. i suppose this would also be useful when traveling as the programming selection at hotels sucks.

vote-for0vote-against

@kirkhilles: It says in the terms of the deal that it works for existing netflix customers, not just new ones. I'd be willing to be that Google is paid Netflix a hefty sum to make their app/content compatible at launch and to offer this deal.

*EDIT: I should say SAID that in the terms of the deal. It seems that the netflix bonus is gone now.

@carl669: Yes, you can watch anything you can stream from a browser on a PC

Personally I'd like to see two features...

1. 5GHz Wi-Fi
2. use of HDMI Ethernet channel. Myself, and at least two friends I can think of have their TV (entertainment center) wired for Cat5e/6.... Wi-Fi is just not as reliable or fast (yes I know 802.11ac is coming...but even then the range is quite poor for those 100mbs+ speeds.

My $.02

vote-for3vote-against

@witkes770 amazon instant video works if streaming off a chrome browser on a PC... if "casting" off an android phone then no...amazon instant video needs flash to run and chrome doesn't support flash for android... which is why i use firefox on my GS4.

vote-for5vote-against

@afrovballpride: Bonus still active. At least with Best Buy. Add it to cart and see the the 3-month sub is also included in your cart for free.

@ciabelle: Thanks had a BB reward zone certificate I was itching to use. $30 + free shipping + 3 months Netflix I couldn't pass up giving it a try.

vote-for12vote-against

I ordered through Amazon, and I wonder if I'll get the same deal for Netflix. Probably not though, as Amazon Instant is a competitor to that.

EDIT: Don't mind me, I just answered my own question:

https://cast.google.com/chromecast/offer

vote-for2vote-against

Anyone know if this device can use Plex? I would buy it for that purpose alone.

vote-for0vote-against

@ciabelle: Is it in stock at BB. Did they give you an estimated arrival date or is it back ordered?

vote-for2vote-against

@wooter2013: Says ships in 1 day (I ordered on online at BB)

vote-for-3vote-against

@aron1231: Not following your logic. The only way to save $24 is to cancel Netflix and then resign up to get the three month? At least, that's the way I interpreted it. Or, do they state you will get a credit to your existing account? If that's the case, I'm in too.

vote-for0vote-against

@cjmoran: That's the key question for me. I'd find it hard to believe Netflix would be willing to give up $24 per existing user, but it DOES say that its good for existing customers. We'll see how it plays out.

vote-for2vote-against

@cjmoran: "Offer available while supplies last. Valid for 3 months of Netflix service on the $7.99 (a month) Unlimited Streaming plan (for total value of $23.97). Valid for previous, new and existing Netflix members ... You may apply the value of the offer to a different plan, or other services offered by Netflix. Exchanges in this manner may alter the duration of the offer."

If you can watch something using Chrome as your browser, then it can be watched using this device. It automatically has "apps" for Google Play and Netflix, but again, if you can see another site using Chrome web browser, you can then "cast" this to the device and see it on your TV. Pretty sweet.

vote-for2vote-against

dang last night amazon had it for $35 with free prime shipping, of course it was delayed until google actually ships it and now amazon has it for about $69...should have cancelled my order with google and bought it last night with amazon.

Re: Netflix - what they said.

I find it hard to believe they specifically include "previous, new and existing Netflix members" and not have a way for it to credit your existing subscription. You know, from a logistics standpoint. It would be incredibly silly of Google to make that offer without having a redemption mechanism in place with Netflix... and forcing you to cancel and re-start your service is more than a minor inconvenience most people would find objectionable. Surely Google and/or Netflix have thought this out.

Like someone else mentioned, the likely origin of the offer is Google provided Netflix a subsidization. The low price point combined with the offer help penetrate the market and spur developers.

If my surround receiver is a passthrough will I be able to plug this into an open hdmi port and it still work?

vote-for2vote-against

@exoblivionejr: Yup. It would be just like plugging in a DVD or Blu-Ray Player to that port.

vote-for3vote-against

I love that amazon only has third party sellers now wanting $90 for this. My fault for waiting until I got home I guess

vote-for4vote-against

As of right now, the google play store has it for $35 with 3-4 week shipping. The Netflix deal has expired.

vote-for2vote-against

ordered mine yesterday and it already shipped...awaiting its arrival

Google canceled the Netflix deal. They suck.

Notice on the Amazon product page for the Chromecast regarding the Netflix promo:

Netflix Promotion No Longer Available
Please note that the Netflix promotional offer (which was available in limited supply) has now ended. Customers who ordered their Chromecast prior to 5:31 PM PST on July 24, 2013 will receive a Netflix gift code via email within 5 days of their product's ship date.

vote-for1vote-against

@westco10: Thanks for the update! I had ordered through Amazon about an hour or so before that time, so we'll see. It was their "unavailable" status, so my bet is that they'll cancel my order and then re-offer it later without the deal.

vote-for1vote-against

I got my digital code (bought my Chromecast through BestBuy yesterday) this morning and plugged it into my existing Netflix account (it gives you the option to apply it to any account you wish). Worked like a charm and showed 3 months ($23.97 total) of free service. Can't wait for the actual hardware to show up (BB shows it shipped today).

vote-for2vote-against

Those who ordered a Chromecast before mentions of the offer disappeared from Google's product pages will still receive 3-month subscription codes for Netflix service (which can be redeemed by both new and existing Netflix customers). Everyone else is outta luck.

vote-for2vote-against

Have a pending order with Amazon, who knows when that will ship.

Went to Best Buy on my lunch and after having to explain to some of the guys what it was, they looked it up and thought they had some. Alas, they had none. BUT they called a nearby store who had a few and were able to get them to hold it while I paid for it at the store I was at.

Got the 3 months of Netflix code, just have to wait til after work to pick up the Chromecast!

Not sure if I'll cancel the Amazon order...

vote-for2vote-against

Google cancelled the Chromecast/Netflix offer but it is still showing up as available: http://www.ibtimes.com/google-chromecast-netflix-offer-cancelled-still-available-best-buy-online-1361115

edit on bestbuy.com, and the Netflix offer still pops into the cart. I wonder how they will handle this...

Dead Deal.
The 3 weeks of Netflix (in the title) has been rescinded.

AND:
"Ships in 3 - 4 weeks"
Should be posted in 3 Weeks

FYI you can now 'stream' any picture of video from your phone to ChromeCast on any CyanogenMod ROM for your Android phone. There is also a way to access your dropbox from this device now.
So needless to say, there is a ton of support coming and this will not be such a limited device here soon.
