i hate this movie and i think it subverts and undermines the intention, atmosphere and meaning of the book. JUST A WARNING to the people who havent seen it... this is not a fun adventure, its a pointless angst filled melodrama. Special effects are good though

Sendak work closes with Spike Jones on the movie so the argument that it "subverts and undermines the intention" of the book may not hold much wait. I really liked the movie, it expanded on the very simple premise of one of my favorite books as a kid.

This takes a good kid's story and turns it into two hours of childhood angst, mixed family drama, bratty neighborhood kids, etc.

There aren't many movies that I started watching and stopped before the end. This was one of them, 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' was another. That's right, I put this movie at "Sky Captain" level in my personal review file. Rep for the good price though.

I disagree with @isentaur, I absolutely loved the movie. Mr. Sendak was very much involved with the production, so to say it undermines the meaning of the book is absurd. Who knows more about the meaning than the creator himself?

The movie conjured up most of the same feelings and emotions that I got when I read the book as a kid...fear, uncertainty, wanting to escape, running rampant, then returning back home. Mr. Sendak stated that he never set out to be a children's book writer, he was merely trying to express himself through these little illustrations and short stories.

When the book was released in 1963, it was banned from libraries and received negative reviews because it was considered controversial. Almost 50 years later, there he was again facing controversy and negative reviews for the film version.

A lot of people were expecting a happy, fun "kids movie" and were sorely disappointed. The fact is it's a movie for anyone, if you want to go Where the Wild Things Are :)

@penglord: I enjoyed 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow'. Graphics were great. The Plot was a takeoff 1930's movies. It takes a few minutes to recognize this.

this movie was darker than i thought i would be going into it, but i still loved it. and considering sendak worked on it closely i doubt this "goes against his vision". for those of you who don't know, sendek was a somewhat dark and cynical (especially for a kids author).

I really loved this movie too and for some reason a lot of people did not like it. I guess they expected/wanted it to be a fun filled childhood romp and it wasn't.

This is more a movie for adults to remember there childhood than for actual children, as others have said it is quite dark and depressing at times. However, childhood isn't always as bright and cheery as we might want to remember it to be.

I actually worked a bit on the publicity for this movie (I was an intern at WB) and I can confirm he worked closely on the production of this movie. He was at the premiere and party as well and it was really amazing to see him in person.

So did anyone else see the headline and think, "The Wild Things are on Blu-Ray?"

vote-for1vote-against

@ndcouch: People would be very surprised to find out that many of their children's favorite authors are in fact dark and cynical. Most of these books have hidden themes and commentary that parents don't pick up on. As a writer I think you'd have to be a bit off to want to be a children's book author in the first place lol.

@penglord: So funny that you mention that. Sky Captain is the only movie that I have ever walked out of the theater on.

As much of a good deal as this is, this movie completely ruined one of my favorite childhood books.

vote-for1vote-against

@mlucechi: Totally agree, never read the book which I'm sure from the comments was great but the movie, BORING!

anyone see the colbert interview segment where he spoke about his dog, and the book he wrote for her? in the book the dog thinks she can do better than just be a dog with a master, and she goes off looking for a better experience. turns out, she realizes she was wrong, and in the end she dies, but leaves a note for her master to try to find her on the other side. i'm 30 years old and would probably cry like a little girl if i read that book. hell, i teared up during the interview. i have a feeling the movie was exactly what he wanted it to be.
