I just bought the damned 20 gig one a couple weeks ago at $19.99! I'm so mad!
1.8" How big is it actually? The casing?
Is this powered through the USB? If so, the transfer rate must be horrible.
Power through USB has no effect on transfer speed, especially in a drive this small (physically).
I bought the 20gb at the same site. The size of the HDD is little bit wider than a business card. The transfer rate is very good. A file or files of about 900mb can take 1min or so, but it is very quick, just like a flashdrive.
In for 1. I've frequented but never purchased from 1saleaday.com and have heard poor things about their shipping speed. It's a great price though, I plan on keeping it hooked up to the deck in my car VIA USB for access to gobs of music.
@megadan: I've made several purchases from 1saleaday.com, shipping isn't the fastest, looking at my order history it's been consistently 10 days from purchase to doorstep.
I've been looking for a small portable drive for a while at the right price point, this one seems tough to beat.
I forgot to mention, the only con about it is the USB cord.
The cord is connected to the HDD and has a nice slot on the drive to hide it. Unfortunately, there is not much of the cord to hide since it is about 1.5 cm long, maybe less. I am guesstimating. It is an awkward length when you have it connected along with other USBs. Now, it if were a retractable cord... this would be prime. Nonetheless, it is still a good buy, especially for 40gb when it was 20gb for 19.99 previously! 20 more gb for 5 bucks!? Woot it!
P.S. in for another one
IN for one.
Sorry I am not very educated with this stuff. . . but can I use this to back up my hard drive on my desktop or would something else be better?
Is this a good deal?
This is a horrible deal. 40GB? You can hit WD's site and pick up a referb Passport 360 GB for $49 shipped.
@yeller: It's slightly wider than a business card. The form factor is something any of the HDDs you might suggest cannot beat.
Has anybody else read the description?
"...But what if Y3K doesn’t prove to be as friendly?..."
I guess we will just have to wait another 990 years to find out if this thing is worth the price.
@schuyler4499: It depends on how much stuff you are backing up. As long as you have under 40GB's of data to backup this will work fine. But if you are just connecting this to your PC as a backup drive you don't need the small form factor. That is what you're paying for. Although $30 for this shipped is still worth the price.
Depends on your needs. The passport is bigger than this drive in terms of physical size.
Many of the reviews on the Passport are that it's junk so what use is spending the money on "more" if it doesn't do what you've bought it for???
Has anyone found the manufacturer's information page for this item or at least it sold at a retailer that gives more information?
Too little is told here...
@chrstncstro: Does the drive still operate well if using a USB extender cable?
Any real specs for this thing? Can we crack the case and use the 1.8 drive in a laptop? Is the actual drive SATA or PATA?
@amartire: Even with the little information available, I'm quite certain that's not possible or even desirable. It's 0.7" too narrow to fit snug and possibly not an appropriate height either.
Additionally, these things are surely a bit outdated. Toshiba doesn't design 40GB externals anymore. It's possibly a relic from a few years ago when 40GB flash drives didn't exist (at least at a reasonable price) so these small drives were their solution. If looking for a new laptop hard drive you'll get a better bang for your buck with newer drives. Keep an eye on Newegg.
Unfortunately I cannot be anymore specific than my assumptions since little information about it is forthcoming.
I've been looking for something portable to back up my papers, this will be perfect!
@ashasplash: A flash drive will be better for that. When it comes to portable backups for papers, the integrity of the device is more important than storage space.
From the shallow product description, I'm assuming this hard drive has moving parts (platters, ect.) using magnetic storage. Such drives, though standard, have a higher chance of breaking due to the shakes it will be exposed when carrying than a flash drive will. A flash drive doesn't use moving parts, making it the ideal portable storage device.
I suggest you get a Corsair Flash Voyager. Great brand, great device (I own two), built in a rubber case that protects it from tumbles.
8GB: $25 w/ free shipping
16GB: $45 - rebate = $30 w/ free shipping.
I wonder if you could crack this thing open and use the bare drive as a replacement for a dead iPod internal drive.
