Crossbows fire bolts, not arrows :-P figured I'd bring that up before some other jackass does

@nmchapma: LOL! Missed that. I've never used a crossbow, although I did enjoy archery back in high school. Of course, that was so long ago that the crossbow had not even been invented, and the textbooks were etched on stone tablets, so.......

It's a dead deal now folks. They've replaced it with a wrist rocket style slingshot for $4.89 including shipping.

@nmchapma: Technically, it is more complicated than that. But the terms are used interchangeably.

If the projectile has fletchings, though, regardless of length, it is technically an arrow. I'm not saying you can't call it a bolt, if you shoot it out of a crossbow, but, by definition, if it has fletchings, it is an arrow.

A true bolt or quarrel has no fletchings, but an flared backside. They are shaped more like a bullet.

Regardless, using common terminology, it is widely accepted to use the terms interchangeably when talking about crossbow ammunition. It is correct to say, "crossbows shoot arrows" as much as it is correct to say, "crossbows shoot bolts."
