A special blend of tea, the Earl Grey melange was named after Charles Grey, the Second Earl Grey, who apparently received a diplomatic gift of this blend. It receives its distinctive flavor and aroma from bergamot oil, derived from a fragrant citrus fruit native to Earth's Mediterranean region.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard was renowned for his fondness of this blend. He typically ordered it hot.

On tasting Earl Grey tea, Elim Garak remarked, "I'd like to get my hands on that fellow Earl Grey and tell him a thing or two about tea leaves."
