Can a ten-dollar gas mask really protect you? It seems like something you wouldn't want to scrimp on.

vote-for3vote-against

I wouldn't rely on this for respiratory protection.

On the other hand it might make a great part of a Halloween costume get-up or, according to one of my acquaintances, appeal to a certain segment of a fringe community. Not sure about that last part as to how or "why" but to each their own, I suppose.

It's only useful as a Halloween costume. If you want an NBC rated Military Grade Gas Mask you are going to spend between $100-$300, depending on the options you get (drinking tube, large visibility visor, etc).

The heavy duty $30 paint masks at Home Depot/Wal-Mart will protect you better than this.

@devexityspace: "The heavy duty $30 paint masks at Home Depot/Wal-Mart will protect you better than this."

Don't tell the Finnish Military that.

vote-for21vote-against

@devexityspace: You are incorrect, this is a military surplus gas mask, meaning that it was purchased by a military for the sole purpose of protecting soldiers. No, this isn't a Hazmat suit and no it won't protect you from serious chemical attacks, BUT it is real and will work just fine.

Note: Military surplus usually means its been sitting unused in storage for 10-40 years, so the filters are trash, buy some filters and enjoy your gas mask.

vote-for-7vote-against

okay seriously? Ya'll really would even entertain the thought for, oh I dunno, 2 seconds, that this would actually be an effective gas mask? Yep, cuz' those Finnish are known for the military readiness. This is a strictly nerf war gas mask. I cannot believe there is even a discussion about this. I expect more from my fellow wooters.

I thought this gas mask was strictly used for cosplay as the Pyro from TF2?

vote-for2vote-against

This would go perfectly with my "Psycho Mantis" Cosplay. Its so much cheaper then the alt. ones and if it turns out to actually be useful....then that's just a bonus

(p.s. I know of the difference in filter location but its close enough)

This mask will, at this point, only protect you from tear gas...which was generally its purpose anyway. It is nice for shock value and laughs though. I bought one a couple of months ago. Those saying it's not real such as @shopgyrl are just ignorant.

vote-for9vote-against

I bought two of these masks last time they were posted. A few things, this mask WILL:
*Help you get a date
*Disrupt your sleeping habits if you are a left side sleeper
*Make an excellent Halloween costume
*Help you avoid detection by your mother-in-law if you run into her in public(this is the only life/death situation I have used it in)

As for what grade of mask this is, if it will keep you alive or protect you from irritants I can not say as this is the only gas mask I have ever had but it does seem to be sturdy.

vote-for2vote-against

I got three of these last time they were up, great deal and fast shipment.

vote-for5vote-against

Pretty sure this gas mask has been decommissioned by the Finnish Army and no longer meets current safety spec.

Also do your self a favor and get a 40mm adapter so you can run NATO standard canisters.

vote-for3vote-against

@doryg151: This is a BUDK company. Im not sure if they are brother/sister companies but when I bought these last time they were shipped by BUDK.

@fit410s: That reply made sense all the way up until you suggested that Ron Paul would somehow make things better. Removal of all regulations will not do anything to improve the situation of the 99%.

vote-for2vote-against

@scottperezfox: lol I was about to say the same thing. GMTA

vote-for-4vote-against

@smattin1: No, but the 1% didn't have to do much to fool you into thinking you are somehow at the same level as them, did they?

Reminds me of a long con. Let people think they are smart enough, successful enough, 'awesome' enough, whatever it takes. Build them up, and they will fall for anything you tell them. See, it appears you are 'standing up' for that 1%. You are doing exactly what they want. And they are laughing their asses off at some ignorant guy who thinks he actually has a chance to make it into that 1%. Believe me, you won't... There is no room for you there.

vote-for13vote-against

You all are forgetting about the most common chemical irritants that people encounter in everyday life. Onions, hot peppers and (for those in that branch of service) toddler poop. I can say with some authority that this mask, and all the other similar surplus masks, are just dandy for battling these horrifying weapons. Seriously, 100% protection, even with 30 year old filters.

If you're expecting battlefield strength CN, buy new filters. But I've heard the "seriously, you'd trust this?" argument about the very same mask I trained with in the Army, now that it's surplus, and I can say "Yes". I trusted it then, and I trust it now. Especially, for the kind of chemical warfare I'm dealing with at this stage of my life.

@lparsons42: well they removed my post. i guess the tsa is on this site :)

I once had a girlfriend whose "tobasco farts" could completely disentegrate this mask. popojoe

vote-for1vote-against

actually... it appears t be a Finnish Gas Mask, I think it's real! It probably protects better than the Russian stuff, probably about as good as any surplus mask you get out there. it's a good price for one

vote-for3vote-against

I have one of these and carry it ever where I hope I never have to use it, I also carry a gun hope I never have to use it well annyway.

vote-for2vote-against

Apocallyptic will this get in the way whill you are bending over to kiss your ass good BYEEE?

vote-for12vote-against

@tidusthealmighty: wow. As someone who has spent 18 hours in a gas mask while responding to a riot, I was surprised that there was an actual discussion about the viability of this mask as a defensive tool. I didn't realize we had so many militia people on this site looking to add to their stockpile. I'm suprised by all the haters and name calling, I miss the discussions about the absurd things we can do with our woot crap; those are certainly much more fun.

@meems212: NO NO it's Mummy for sure Daddy maby!!!!!

vote-for5vote-against

What did the Russian soldier with a gas mask on say to the soldier from Finland with a gas mask on, during a gas attack?

"You're Finnish'd!"

vote-for3vote-against

@addixon: I do believe it does, thanks :D

Expired canisters are dangerous. Beware.
