This map update can only be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your Garmin device. For example, a Garmin GPS device preloaded with North America maps only cannot be updated with a nüMaps Lifetime Europe Map Update, and vice versa.

I bought this update deal a few months ago. It lets the buyer do up to four updates a year, which will likely take care of anyone's needs.

@magic cave: That seems reasonable to me. Especially if it takes a few hours each time, I can't see wanting to update more often than that.

I've found I've never needed new features on my Garmin, just that over several years the roads had moved, gas stations were no longer there, etc. I'm trying to think of a reason not to get this, and I'm not coming up with any...

(still trying...help?)

@perkalicious11: If I'm not mistaken, the lifetime update card can only be used on one Garmin device, so if that device ever dies, so do your free lifetime updates.

@perkalicious11: I constantly read that the stand-alone GPS is on its way out as all cars will come with them and they will be on all smart phones. Since I keep cars for many years and do not have a smart phone (surely I am not alone in this), I am hoping those predictions are wrong. So for those like me, this might be worthwhile.

edit: defined kind of GPS I meant.

@homer41: I interpret it the same way, but that'd be the same as any other new device purchased with lifetime maps too. I chalk that up as a wash, I think. But I'm open to persuasion.

I love my Google Motorola Droid. Real-updating Satellite Imagery with always up-to-date Road Maps on top. Nothing like being able to see exactly what the place looks like, and then using Street View option to confirm what the turn looks like all from Google Droid Navigation. Plus the Google "Droid Woman" voice sticks with you.

New Droid 2 Phone on Upgrade or New Account is only $35 at Amazon Wireless - I recommend before anyone decides to continue dropping money on GPS upgrades.

But then you have to pay an expensive, recurring fee to get that information on your cell phone, plus get the cell phone if you don't have a smartphone already. If you need to have internet available on your phone 24/7, then a GPS unit is a good option (cheaper in the long run).

And Google maps aren't always correct, I've seen them be wrong before, like any map can be.

Nothing can replace a person's common sense and natural ability to lead themselves....but GPS units and cell phones do have a place and are useful.

@eremita: I have had multiple cars with built in navigation systems. I love the look, and especially appreciate the integration with car systems such as a backup camera, tire pressure, etc. However, one thing I hate is the price they charge for them. On top of this outrageous charge when you buy the car, an update typically costs $150 or more. My new car has hard drive based navigation, and to update it's maps, you must purchase a $150 update code, and then go to your dealer to have them update your maps for an additional $100. $250 for the newest maps? Hell, you can get a great standalone unit, or put a good dent in a cell phone bill for that amount of cash.

This is, by far, the best deal(price) available for Garmin Lifetime updates. I like the portability and versatility of having a stand alone GPS unit. The screen on my Droid is too small for some of my applications. I use my Garmin GPS in all of my vehicles, including my motorcycle and my RV. With this upgrade, my Garmin Nuvi 765t should last me for many, many years.
I have been watching the price of this item on Ebay for quite a while and this price is $5.00 better than any previously advertised on Ebay.

On the plus side, you can take your GPS with you when driving someone else's car, or a rental, or loaner. Then there's the ability to change the travel mode for when you're walking around while on vacation and value your life enough to be sure to keep from strolling off towards sights you don't need to see, or be seen in! However, the portability when on foot can also be had if you have a smart phone. I trust my iPhone for current mapping software any day over Garmin's new phones or their so called updates. It still surprises me how they omit listing a retail establishment which has been in business for years. I would still recommend them for sticking on the windshield when driving, in order to leave my phone free for it's primary purpose - texting! I mean, incoming calls.

Thanks for posting this deal. I've been using a GPS with 2 year old maps because I couldn't bring myself to drop the $100 it would have cost for a one time update. This is a better price and it is for lifetime updates. And as a bonus, I now have Canada loaded as well!

I would have jumped at this but my nuvi is just over 2 years old & keeps hanging up... I guess these things don't have a life of much more than a couple of years. My previous Garmin iQue M3 also died after a bit over 2 years!

You can buy a 'stand alone' unit at Walmart for less than a hundred bucks...
Use it in every vehicle you are in and carry it in your pocket...
If you need new updates more than every 3 years or so, you need to move to a more stable country...
