Oh the Irony.
Oh the Humanity.
This sucks. The forums are going to be inundated with idiots trying and failing horribly to flash Android.
There should be an IQ test required to purchase this.
I bet this goes quick!
I can't decide guys. Do I need this? Is the bigger screen size going to make it more fun than my Nook Color? Or am I just an idiot for wanting a second tablet?
If I want to upgrade from my gTablet, would one of these be worthwhile?
Only tempted because I had one for two weeks and returned it, but not before I got a $50 credit for apps\games. If I bought it, I could get them back. I'll stick with my Samsung Series 7 Slate with Windows 8 Preview on it.
were these the things that were on fire sale a while back for $99?
It has been the month of Tablets. I guess the is the coup de grâce.
I know nothing about WebOS. Is there enough app support there for basic functions? Or do you really have to flash Android to get good use out of it?
i have one of the 32 GB ones that i got super stupid cheap.... I know someone who works at HP. anyway point is android is stupid simple to install. just wish the battery life was better on it.
YOSH,YOSH,YOSH!!!
This seems like a good deal. You can put Android 4.0 ICS on it right now.
@kentobi: Yeah, I actually kind of like my WebOS...I fully intended to flash Android but haven't yet. Don't use it a ton, but totally, yea. WebOS is definitely a functional OS.
(What I really like is the card system - it's how the windows are arranged and managed.. it stacks windows/apps/browsers like a stack of cards and gives you a great preview of each of 'em.. I think mostly though, I just like the fact that you can throw 'em off the screen to close em. And the "whooosh" noise. I think what I really like is the noise.)
...and cue the griefers who still moan about this being above retail value because they weren't lucky enough to get one at that price :P
I'm obviously not a genius, yet I was able to both try out Android and reset it through webos doctor...which was not all that difficult.
I'm just weirded out that woot is selling them at this price.
Anyone else read about Open WebOS by the end of the year?
I bought one of these during the firesale, and I love it. I overclocked it, and it is blazing fast. I fully intended to flash it to Android, but just haven't really seen a need yet. WebOS isn't great, but it's perfectly fine for what I do(surf the web and use it as my ereader with the Kindle app). There aren't a ton of apps, but I think that will change when HP releases the WebOS source code later this year. There is a pretty big homebrew community for WebOS too. Two thumbs up for this one.
These are great tablets. I love my Touchpad and use it every day. You can use just about all the WebOS phone apps on it. Pandora sounds great on the speakers.
/sad that there is no netflix app
@outer78: Yes
And I'll also say..
If you've been thinking about getting a tablet BUY THIS.
Yeah, it's a little more than the "firesale," but you won't see a tablet (this good) this cheap for probably at least another year.
I'd buy this in a heartbeat if I didn't already have one.
[still consdering it though :)]
What I don't understand is how woot! could not come up with 2 different pictures, it's the same picture on the main woot! site.
Pricing on the 16 sure is better than the 32gb version. This is worth it if you put CM7 on it. I heard CM9 was out, but mine running CM7 is awesome, so I'll wait for CM9 to catch up to the CM7 functionality.
@kentobi: I have a 32GB one. I added preware and am running at 1.7GHz. I have 15 or so movies on it that look amazing. FB app is ok, web browsing is great. I can run Amazon Prime videos amazingly. There is a full MS Office compatible Suite out there called Smart Office for $9.99. E-mail client is good, not great, but inegration with MS Exchange is superb.
I sort of wish I hadn't seen this one before the 32gb on main.woot! but I'm satisfied just to have a server that doesn't crash the second I try to buy one.
P.S.- Thanks Jumbowoot!
Pretty decent deal. You can flip these for like 210 if you wanted.
@drchops: I like the idea of the card system, but it's executed badly. When I want to switch tabs on any browser window on any tablet or computer, I tap or click. When I want to switch browser cards, I have to hit the home button and riffle through the displayed cards until I find the one I want.
WebOS has a lot of good ideas, but I think it's a version or two away from having good features.
Got one! I'm excited. Should I be excited? Quick, someone get me outta buyer's remorse!
Or maybe a link for how to install android?
Since webos is opensourced, does this have potential?
@stark: +1 for your comment!
Hell, I scored a 32Gb for $150 when it went on sale and I use it for all my internet work execpt what requires serious typing (don't have a bluetooth keyboard). That's 80% of my online work, which is mostly reading. This is definitely is better than any sub-$300 tablet out on the market now. I figure on fooling around with Android on it. If it is not up to par with Android, I can restore it to the original OS and keep it in the car instead of hauling my 32 gigga around.
In for one. I don't plan on using it, but the lady will be pleased to not have to use her iphone on the couch.
I plan to flash over to cm7 immediately.
@ericshmerick: They have released at least one new significant title since the announced death of WebOS: Smart Office (full). It is a fully functional office suite that is MS Office compatible.
In for one. The only issue I see over most other tablets is that there doesn't seem to be any memory card slot, so consider the 32GB if you think you need more than 16GB, as you can't just throw a card in this to expand it.
Anyone know if the microUSB connector is host capable?
I love mine. Heck of a lot cheaper than an iPad.
got one. should i feel good about buying this and saving $500 by not buying a new ipad?
Too bad I just bought the Archos from sellout.woot.com last week; I'd love to pick one of these up.
If you don't have an iPad, well, you don't have an iPad.
I think I'll buy this Touchpad just so that I can sell it on Craigslist or Ebay and turn a profit.
70% mark up for a refurb product, check.
Near extinct operating system, check.
Lots of people making the meaningless point that it's cheaper than an iPad, check.
Avoiding like the plague, check.
16GB or 32 GB?
Picked this up during the fire sale, I don't use it very often but I keep it in my car when I need a larger screen to work with then my iPhone.
There are also a few sites I log onto that my iPhone doesn't like the security settings that this works perfect for.
I do find WebOS to lag a little with response times though.
It doesn't look like this has a card reader. Does anyone know if you can hook up a card reader to the USB slot? I want to immediately review my pictures on the TP.
I have 2 of the 32gb model purchased during fire sales and love them. I could have lived with the 16gb model, and definitely recommend it at this price. The post above about having issues using cards with the browser is understandable and the Advanced Browser available in the HP App Catalog solves the not having tabs problem and a few other annoyances. I have the latest Cyanogen mod alpha installed as well but prefer Webos for it's stability.
@robbsawyer: The battery life on my 32GB is amazing! The thing lasts for a few days.
@mjc05: There is no USB slot or card reader
Regarding external memory: The USB port on the Touchpad can function as a host. However, it is un-powered. If you have a Y cable that has one USB plug for external power, then yes, you can use a card reader. This assume you have a source for external power. I actually have a USB power device that uses 4 AAA bateries.
Owned one - sold it. Applications make these fun and there are not enough fun apps to make this worth it. LOVE my iPad2...
In for 1. At this price, it's not much more than a comparable eBay Chinese tablet - something I've been close to buying many times. I'm sure with CM I'll be able to read some comics, which is all I want to do. Having to use a y cable to potentially power anything to use the USB port fully doesnt scare me off. My one question is - should I buy a screen protector for this thing? Have read varying opinions on the use of screen protectors for tablets as a whole, my inclination is to use one.
More expensive than fire sale, but still cheaper than anywhere else on the web. Want to be in for one. Does anyone know what the vga capabilities on this are? I want to be able to watch stuff on my tv.
