$350 for refurb that includes new battery and outer shell:

For $100 more you get the iPad2 that is lighter, thinner, has two cameras, twice the processor speed and 9 times the video speed, and the ability to connect to a TV via HDMI.

I was just saying that at $299 I could see getting the old model over the new one, but at $399 or even $350 it's way to close in price concidering how much faster the new one is.

I just got my nook color for 200 bucks from a woot post. It is running stock android 2.1. I am going to upgrade to 3.0 or 2.2 tonight (takes all of 15 minutes). No camera, but hell, a high quality pad for 200 bucks from a reputable vendor? can't beat that. I mean really. What are we all going to do with a pad? Run our business? No. It's to browse the web, play angry birds, write emails, and watch movies. If anyone wants to spend 400 bucks on a 16GB ipad, be my guest, but it doesn't even run flash videos. It is defnitely very pretty and has a slick interface, but to me, it just wasn't worth it. root a nook color. you'll be happy you did. unless you are a fan boy.

You know why the iPad doesn't run Flash? It's not because of efficiency or security. If it were, then you wouldn't be able to run Flash on the mac desktops and laptops. They don't like Flash because it would directly compete with the apps. Why buy an app when you can go to some website and get similar features for free?

vote-for7vote-against

@jayg71: dual core is not twice the processor speed. If you think that's the case, you're an idiot. sorry to be so harsh, but you are getting a dual-core processor, which is at most going to increase your ability to do stuff by 20-40%. You will not see twice the performance with it. end of story.

@jayg71: Let me just say the rear camera on the iPad (or any tablet) is about the most useless thing ever. I just can't imagine anyone holding a tablet up or bringing it around to take pictures.

A front camera makes sense for videoconferencing. Heck, even a top camera might make sense, if you want to lay the tablet flat on a table and record a conference or class (not possible with the rear, a standard iPad stand would cause the camera to face into the ground).

But a rear camera? I imagine most people using it once or twice just to test it out, then never again. I just don't understand it, I feel like tablet designers only did it because various tech pundits "expected" it.

vote-for4vote-against

@tucnguyen: Exactly. Why buy when you can get it for free. Apply wants to you to buy everything Apple. From dongles, peripherals, etc. This is why Apple IS 1984 and has become tyrannical. I'm not saying Apple doesn't have good products. I'm saying that when you do the cost benefit analysis without emotion, hype, fanboy orgasms... you simply cannot justify the increase in cost over a lower priced alternative.

@dirtydave0221: In the news, though, they are saying it has double the processing power and almost 10 times the graphics power. http://www.cmswire.com/cms/mobile/apple-launches-ipad-2-faster-lighter-new-apps-same-price-010378.php They were saying the same thing on TV, yesterday.

@novastarj: A front facing camera is far from useless. While using the iPad like a normal camera is kind of silly, the front facing camera is good for Augmented Reality type things. While a lot of people have no use for this rather geeky functionality, it was one of the non-starters for our company to consider new development on the iPad.

@publiclurker: I feel like AR has less practical application when the device isn't as portable and readily accessible as a phone.

Sure, it does allows for nifty tricks with games, but some cool iPhone apps that use it (like Word Lens) don't really have a place on the iPad (at least, IMO).

vote-for1vote-against

@dazoneranger: You would prolly be better off listening to dirty dave. The line that they are dropping "twice the processing power" is true in the sense that now you have two cores each at 1ghz rather then just one. However now these cores have to work together on tasks. If they upped the one processor to 2ghz you might see closer to twice the speed. The multiple cores will increase the speed, and be most effective for multitasking

You simple minded freaks! this is why you are simple consumers and not developers. The rear and front facing cameras can be manipulated for not only pictures but several applications and settings that have nothing to do with everyday simple picture taking. Applications can be developed for the Ipad to do several things like live security when left docked at home and no one would know. It can be used to have images processed for Live Surgical operation where parties on both ends can manipulate the rear facing camera while explaining solutions. There are endless possibilities having two cameras. All you guys think of is pictures hmmm SMH. Just sit there and keep thinking of reasons why Apple isn't the innovation leader. If you cant afford it then don't buy it! keep it moving!

vote-for1vote-against

@novastarj: It all depends on the application. I actually work on navigational type apps and a phone just has too small of a screen to be useful.

vote-for2vote-against

Apple makes you buy Apple because they want the consumer's experience to be consistent and to work out of the box. No downloading drivers, no hit-and-miss start-ups, and no trojan horses in the App Store masquerading as games but sending your device and personal info to G*d-knows-where.

You pay a premium because it works. If you don't mind gambling with the personal information you put on your tablet, wondering if the off-brand dongle you bought will actually work with your tablet, and/or aren't impressed with award-winning customer service in both retail stores and online, feel free to become an Android. Call me a FanBoi if you wish, but I appreciate quality and consistency over "openness" and cheap.

@rascahuevos: An iPad camera wouldn't be worth crap if you are doing surgery. Its a great camera for videos or maybe taking a few pics but you are going to want a lot more quality from a camera if you want to see anything.

And home security? Are you kidding me? The first thing anyone will take during a break in is the iPad you intelligently placed in plain sight to keep an eye on your house.

Try again

@mspt: You buy apple because you are not tech savy. You would sacrifice customization, for simplification. You want them to hold your hand and tell you to buy more of their overpriced products, so that you dont get "confused" when picking peripherals. You want a tablet with the worlds best MOBILE OS. Then you realize that all you have is a big ipod. You wish that you had gotten a real operating system with an OS not preceded by the word mobile. You look around and cant find any usb ports. You realized that wifi printing refers to only a select few printers. You cant change the battery when it doesnt hold a good charge. However you are content because your device is still very shiny, and looks super duper cool

@sapelton: Pegged me. Wow. I shall now bow to the G*ds of Google. Thank you for ripping the scales from my eyes in a most obnoxious and condescending way.

However, I do know how to spell "savvy", so I guess I still have some kind of hope.

vote-for1vote-against

@publiclurker: A navigational app that uses AR? I'm guessing you take a picture of street signs or an intersection or something, and it shows you where you are? Coupled with a normal nav-system.

That's a pretty cool in concept, though with the existence of GPS it seems moot. Or maybe I'm way off in speculating how you would use AR and a nav app together.

vote-for1vote-against

@tewkewl: Personally, I can't justify the additional cost of an iPad, No?ok!, or any other gadget over a bit of peace and quiet. Just sayin'...

I get by making unjustifiable purchases, like everyone else; but to say a toy is a justified purchase would suggest you don't exactly need that job.

vote-for1vote-against

@mspt: Its gonna be tough to bow down when your already on your knees for steve jobs

vote-for1vote-against

@sapelton: Brilliant! You are such a witty fellow. Oxford? Cambridge?

I'd respond more, but I don't do battles of wits with an unarmed man. Feel free to spout more, though. I am entertained, if not impressed.

vote-for1vote-against

@mspt: All you know about me is that I cant spell savvy, and I talk like an ass-hole. I know that your brain isn't well developed enough to handle anything above an Ipad. Luckily you can pay a few hundred extra dollars per year so that apple care can look after your stuff.

vote-for1vote-against

@novastarj: It's more along the lines of overlaying our derived content over an image retrieved from the camera. The GPS to determines exactly where you are at, and then the system can add other useful information to the screen for you.

vote-for1vote-against

@publiclurker: Sounds like something useful on a golf course or walking around, but not so much when driving. Cool idea though, good luck with your development.

vote-for2vote-against

Will the Apple space monkeys please stop posting stuff that is not a deal. That is the new retail price for the iPad since the iPad 2 is now the same price as the old iPad. A deal is defined is something that is below retail price. Do us non-Apple zombie fanboys a favor and only post it if it is indeed a deal. The refurbished iPad qualified as a deal. For your sins go say 20 hail Steve Job's and stop posting non-deals. Thank you.

vote-for2vote-against

@dirtydave0221: Not to be harsh, but what @jayg71 is saying, and what Apple is saying, the iPad2, with the dual core processor, is twice as fast as an iPad1 ... it can be, and it is. So now, who's the idiot?

vote-for1vote-against

@rascahuevos: Of course, it would be live security until they broke in, walked over to your docked iPad, and walked away with it ...

vote-for1vote-against

@ibbarkingmad: You really can't expect them not to jump in here. In their world, this is like porn or something. I can see them putting a print-out of the listing in their little shrine at home, next to the picture of Jobs and the section of fabric from a shirt that maybe possibly an Apple engineer touched one time.
