Philips 1000-Watt 5.1 DVD Home Theater System with 1080p Upconversion for $119.99 + shipping
Maybe if, while you watch, you eat delivery from a restaurant the health department closes down periodically, that would help.

This is a pretty decent low-end complete sound system. I bought mine a few months ago from Target. The DVD audio w/ surround sound is great, and the optical connection to my tv works pretty well - I don't think it's true surround sound, but it does a pretty good job. The radio works well too. The ipod dock connector that came with it works, but the volume adjustment is kinda messed up - at volume level 3 it'll be hard to hear and level 4 it'll be pretty loud. Overall, definitely meets expectations for $125 system.
Whoa 1000 watts? Is that a lot? It sounds like a a lot...
I also have one of these from Target. I've had it for almost a year now with no major complaints. It is definitely decent, does it's job, and looks pretty snappy. One issue I have is that it randomly turns on while I'm watching TV. If there's a DVD in it, it'll just go ahead and play it. Maybe it knows better than I do, and is sure that I missed that subtle joke from Arrested Development and that I should really watch that episode again. I usually prefer to watch things at my own pace.
So - just keep the remote handy to turn it off or mute it when that happens. Seriously though, does that happen to anyone else?
Love Philips surround sound systems. I moved from a 500w system to a 1000w Philips system around 2 years ago and they're more than worth the $$ vs performance.
Phillips electronics is JUNK. Don't buy it you will be sorry you did. I had purchased a Phillips DVD recorder and it went bad within the year. The problem was clearly a Phillips design issue as many people on the web were experiencing the same issue. Contacted Phillips to get a repair and all they did was give me the run around. Buy at your own risk but I will not buy Phillips electronic anything. There are plenty of other good brand names out there.
I have PART of this model. About two years ago I bought a Philips surround sound unit at Target and right before the warranty was up, the dvd player/amp unit went haywire. Within 10 minutes on a Saturday on the phone with an American in Georgia, I had replacement unit being shipped to me. That's pretty darn good customer service.
When the replacement arrived, it was actually this model. It is small, nice, and works well. It is not the same as an expensive sound system, but it is a heck of a lot better than just TV speakers.
My dad recently bought a 50" plasma and got a free Samsung Surround sound unit/upconverter with it. The sound was not nearly as good as this model, and it even came with a microphone to set the right levels... As far as a cheap surround sound, I'd rather spend $120 on this than something random like k-tec or something.
I really enjoy this Philips model. We use it every day, and tv sounds horrible without it!
Good luck!
:)
Will this let you plug in a phonograph?
My n=1 experience: Purchased this from woot a month or two ago. For the price . . . . LOVE it. Audiophiles will stick their noses in the air (and perhaps rightly so), but my ears not sensitive enough, I guess, to distinguish uber primo sound from just really good sound.
Complementing the 46" LCD we bought, this has helped create a new tradition: family movie night. Turn the lights down and add some popcorn, and you have a wonderful family-bonding environment.
The not-all-roses section: Hate the proprietary speaker connections. Also, just mute the sound now when the tv's off, because it would occasionally have a hard time realizing the sound was back on when I would power up the satellite box.
How much wiring required to TV and speakers (how far apart do they have to be? And can I connect my computer to play my Grooveshark favorites? Thanks from the elderly unimformed.
I also feel it was a waste of money to buy this Philips unit. Worked fine for awhile, then lost power during dvd playback and could not be revived. After many calls to customer service and weighing shipping costs, I decided to write it off to experience and will not buy Philips HT gear again. Lesson learned the hard way sometimes is tough.
bought this a couple of months ago off here. works great, can pump some good bass when my ipod is hooked up through the dock, only downside is, the sub (which actually hits pretty decent) doesn't have any control, so your stuck with what you get, love the front usb port, just download a movie, put it on a flashdrive, plug in and watch. not a bad system for the price, definitely sounds better than the stock speakers on my samsung flatscreen.
I purchased this unit about a month ago when it was up on woot before. Got the unit perfectly fine, the surround cables seemed a little short. It worked really well when it was turned on. When I turned it off there was a constant beep/tone emitting from the power supply. I sent it in for repair to the warranty company woot uses. This was over a month ago. At this point the unit has been in repair longer than it has been in my house. This is completely unacceptable.
I have called them 5 times each time I was told someone would call me back. I just called them right before I made this comment and got the same old someone will call me back.
Sure you can hook a phonograph up to this if the phono has RCA outputs. Just get rca male to male cables and hook it up....or rca to 3.5 mil. jack for the 3.5 jack on the front of the Phillips unit
This will work with a phonograph if you have a phono preamp. Some newer record player have these inside but most do not so you may need to purchase one. If you do not have the preamp, the sound will be pretty bad.
Ooh! I've had this on my wishlist on Amazon for a while -- they're charging over $200, and it's on backorder! In for one!
