I'm a fan of restaurant.com certificates. Sometimes they offer 90% off. Good deal! Just make sure you pay attention to the description as some stipulate on which days you can use the certs, and there are often restrictions on alcohol purchases.
that URL doesn't resolve for me... it somehow tries to take you to www.restaurant.com2f. anyone else having that problem?
URL has an extra "2f" at the end of it.
broke link... The URL "www.restaurant.com2f" is not valid.
I'd steer clear of Restaurant.com. In my experience at least, the certificates come with FAR too many regulations and stipulations. We received a Restaurant.com gift card and expected a free dinner. Turned out all of the restaurants listed require you to spend at least 10 or more dollars than the gift certificate amount! For example, we wanted to go to an Irish restaurant. It's relatively pricey so we used our 100 dollar gift card from Restaurant.com to print out 4 $25 "dining certificates" turns out you could only use ONE of these dining certificates per table per month! And only if you spend 35 dollars! What's more, they add an 18 percent gratuity fee!
I can't blame them for adding the gratuity. Waiters depend on their tips. A lot of people who use a gift certificate tip on how much they end up paying in addition to the gift card instead of the entire cost of the meal. So just a note to those using a gift card: if use a $20 gift card toward a $30 meal, you need to tip based on $30, not $10. (I am not a waiter but I know a lot of people who are.)
If you read and understand the terms as a purchaser these are very good deals. Just don't forget to check your account occasional before they expire.
@xtowelyx
That's an unfair comment. All you have to do is READ the full description before you purchase...it's really not that difficult. Restaurant.com isn't trying to put anything over on anyone. If you buy a $25 certificate for $2...and you are required to spend a total of $35...or $50...that's still a pretty damn good deal. And yes...sometimes you can't use them on a Friday or Saturday...but that is no reason at all to "steer clear" of them. Again, read the description and then decide. I have bought and used at least 50 certificates over the past few years, and I rarely have a problem...and if I do, customer service (via e-mail) is excellent. With 6 kids, there is NO WAY I could dine out as much as we do without these. So READ the stipulations and then decide if you can abide.
"Waiters need their tips." wah wah wah.
I tip at every opportunity, so don't get me wrong, but I think it's ridiculous who gets tips and who doesn't.
I make minimum wage working in a school kitchen, washing dishes and making meals, and I don't see a penny in tips. All I see is spoons, forks, and napkins thrown into the food waste buckets which I have to then fish out before I can throw it down the garbage disposal.
I see people who work customer service for minimum wage get treated like garbage by ignorant a**les and they don't see a penny in tips.
Waiters don't deserve tips. There are many more demanding jobs that receive minimum wage, and many more disgusting. I wish I could understand why they get tips and we don't.
@rageofangels: Because the minimum wage is lower for waiters than for other kinds of jobs. Minumum wage for waitstaff in my state is under $3, compared to over $8 for other minimum wage jobs.
Because of this, a waiter is totally dependent on tips.
Link fixed.
P.S. Use these all the time and never a problem as long as you eat with someone else. Use it tonight on a sushi place in Addison, TX that just opened and it was really good!
@ dusthouart... i dont think you understand what minimum wage is.. its the MINIMUM wage that state allows someone to pay someone. You can not be paid 3 dollars less then minimum wage or that would be illegal. so if minimum wage is under $3 in your state then $8 is NOT minimum wage
I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's F'd up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government F's in the A on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college BS I got two words for that: learn to F'n type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big F'n surprise.
@dustthouart: Thank you.
According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, that low hourly wage you speak of when combined with tips must be at least the state's minimum wage, else the employer must make up the difference. So waiters do not depend on tips, but they hope for them in order to make more than minimum wage.
I've used restaurant.com gift certificates several times and they're totally worth it. So what if they ask you to spend $10 more than the gift certificate ($25) is worth. If you're getting $25 worth of food for $2, what's an extra $10? The restaurants have to make some money. There's no way you're going to be able to go in and order $25 worth of food and both them and Restaurant.com are going to profit off your $2.
And this is why America is great. Someone working for minimum wage at a school kitchen is arguing in an online forum about gift certificates lol. Maybe spend this time trying to better your life instead of discussing an off topic subject on a woot forum, but I guess we do need people like you to do the jobs no one else wants to. So keep on keepin on!
@markaksamit: i guess you feel real good about yourself picking on a poor lunch lady. Lol. If you knew how to read she was arguing about a waiter/waitress crying about receiving tips they probably dont even deserve. Good servers are few and far between these days. Apparently good people are too.
@travace: i dont think you understand. i live in Pa. Minimum wage is now $7.25/hr. The minimum wage for TIPPED employees is $2.83/hr. Guess what 99% of waiters/waitresses in Pa make an hour? Yea, $2.83. If after tips, their hourly wage is not equal to or above the $7.25 minimum, then the employer must make up the difference. But, that is calculated on a weekly or bi-weekly basis depending on pay periods. So yea, they do depend on their tips. and if you are one of those ppl that dont tip or dont tip fairly, you know where you can go.
ps. ive never been a server. but im a chef and i know how my co-workers get screwed
I live in Portland, OR, and we are one of the only states that requires waiters to get full minimum wage, which is around 8.50 and tips on top of that, so I don't really always tip the best, but with these coupons, you end up having to. They are still a good deal though. I got a couple $100 gift cards for $8 each. You can't beat that. There are tons of restaurants in my area that use them, so I never get bored. We found an awesome middle eastern food restaurant that is super cheap because of restaurant.com. $35 dollars gets way more food than four people could eat at this restaurant. This is a good investment if you like to eat out a lot. Portland is also known for it's happy hours where food is really cheap at most restaurants during certain hours. Sometimes these coupons work during that too.
For emotion's sake:
1. It's a student job.
2. I live in OR, too.
3. I'm quite content with life. It's not the size of your fortune, but the size of your grin.
4. At least you feel like you need me. Sorry, but I can't reciprocate the feeling.
if you buy a 25 dollar gift cirtificate for 2 bucks, it is like saving 23 dollars. if you have to spend 35 dollars with 18% gratuity, that ends up being $41.30. When you subtract the 23 dollars, you are still getting a lot of food and drink for $18.30. That is a hell of a good deal.
@robertmcclure: Sorry about the quazi-psudo-spam i left everyone, that was inconsiderate of me.
@rangerkeeper: I see what you did there...(+1 Internets)
It's an 18% gratuity. Seriously, we're arguing that's unfair? I tip 15% for marginal service, 20% for good, and 25%+ for exceptional. If I have the money to go out, I have the money to be generous with the tip. If I need to quibble over 3-5%, I should probably be eating at home.
Try not to think of all the ways your life is worse: try thinking of it as a way you can be nice to someone else. Maybe karma will see it that way, too.
@liquidfiretibby: here in California the law is different. you can not be paid anything less then minimum wage.. tip type job or not. they get the hourly that is the same as what a construction workers minimum wage. Also waitresses depend on those tips or else they would not be working for minimum hourly wage. they would do something else. BTW they ARE taxed by the sales they do so if you dont tip you ARE taking money of of their pockets. Obviously each state it varies a little so either one of us is not wrong.
LOL. All I have to say about this discussion. its like politics and church.
Many of you may not know, but at a lot of the chain restaurants the waiters have to split the tips with the busboys and cooks. Tipping is just a way for restaurants to not have to pay full wages. This is America, if you don't like what your getting paid, you get a better job! There are a lot of more deserving people that could use tips than waiters/waitresses. That being said, I do tip IF I WANT TO! not because I am SUPPOSED to!
So how do I get the $25 for $2 mentioned? I only see the standard offer on their site. Thanks
Personally I just don't like when a tip is added automatically, because it doesn't give the waiter/waitress any motivation to provide good service. On most, if not all occasions, I'll tip at least 15-20%, but if the server knows that I HAVE to tip a certain amount before they even do anything, what's the motivation to provide good service?
Not saying they're going to do it on purpose, but if I need something at the same time as somebody else who's tab DOESN'T include an automatic tip, then the server would be stupid to serve me first.
Then again, it's just another stipulation on these certificates. They do a good job of spelling everything out up front, so if you don't like it don't buy!
Who cares, I'm in for 2! First time, thanks.
