I heard that Green drives are extremely slow when it comes to loading up files. Could be wrong though, probably am.

They aren't slow at loading files, just at accessing them. Once the drive spins up, the read/write time isn't too much slower than your normal drives. These drives are intended to be used as back up storage. I recommend running your main system on something else.

@dcponcho They can be slow at writing files if you don't have the partitions aligned properly. In Win7 this isn't a problem, and it's pretty easy to fix in Linux as well. With XP you basically have to create the partitions by hand and there's a whole lot of math behind it.

But if you're not using XP or Win2003 you should be fine! I have two of the green drives and I think they're great.

@capguncowboy: I've been running my OS (Win7) off of a 1.5TB WD Caviar Green for about 8 months now, and I haven't had any problems. I've been meaning to buy a spare drive for backup purposes, maybe now's a good time for that...

I just bought this for $110 from amazon 2 days ago! I'm going to call their customer service and find out if I'm eligible for price protection or something like that

Just noticed... price is going up. Now at 94.99

@thetooth: That usually means it's a different seller. The price you see listed is from the seller with the lowest price. Once they go out of stock the seller with the next lowest price moves up.

I'm in on this.... I need more space. I have twom wd green 500 gb drives - no complaints.

@dcponcho: Green drives make use of large cache buffers and technologies like slowing the movement of the drive head to align better with the drive platter to reduce power consumption. Green drives are basically low power 5400 RPM drives, based upon my tests they run at about 80%-85% the speed of 7200 RPM drives with less heat and much less noise.

Note some of my older 7200 RPM drives ran slower than these.

It's back up to 109.99 - but the big difference between amazon and newegg, at least for me, is no tax or shipping charges from the jungle river. The scrambled ones charge me both, and at 9.75%+10 bucks mailin', 109 from A is better than 99 from N or Frys. Little dissappointed I missed the 93. Oh well, maybe next week.
