fidett is a major dork!
Fidett keep up the good work, I like my telescopes
I have this one, except with a GoTo mount instead of the nicer/better equatorial mount. The only disadvantage here is there is a slight, very slight learning curve with this kind of mount. This is an excellent telescope that you can at least pick out all the planets in our solar system.
Use the money you save here and at least pick up a nice 2x Barlow lens. If you want to spend a little extra get a 15mm lens while your at it.
Useful magnification is probably about 135x to 150x rather than 200x. Use a 7mm eyepiece at best for high powers.
For those new to astronomy, the rule of thumb for usable power is 30x power per inch of telescope objective diameter. The atmosphere generally gets in the way past this limit, though in the best conditions you might get to 50x per inch of telescope objective size.
I'm about to buy this, is this all I need right out of the box to start seeing the stars?
@jgmcgowan: Yes it is.
Sweet, ended up buying the Starter Package that includes Star Maps, and a power motor for 179.
Thanks! I just got the same Celestron 114 EQ but with the Explorer package. Also, using coupon code YF-9659 saved me $22 on the deal! :)
Nice deal. Thanks. I may get this. I have wanted a telescope for years and this may be the deal to go for it.
@bestbuysucks: Tried that code and it says, "We're sorry, this discount code is only valid for qualifying customers." Any tips? This would be a nice setup for my kids.
It looks like it's only about $5 more from Amazon (price in cart): http://www.amazon.com/Celestron-31042-AstroMaster-Reflector-Telescope/dp/B000MLL6R8
@brossow: I think that discount code YF-9659 the order total might need to be over $150 USD? Not sure but I searched around for Hayneedle codes and that one came up and worked for me. There is another one out there for 15% off but could not get that one to work.
Thanks for the heads up. Wife has wanted one of these for a few years. Spent some time at the site and got the explorer package that includes the motor drive and a set of lenses with filters for $209! Nerds Unite!
@bestbuysucks: Thanks for the reply. I actually had over $300 in my basket at the time I tried. Oh, well. Shouldn't be spending that kinda money anyway. :-)
